Oskar and Jake

One week ago, the Detroit Red Wings acquired Oskar Sundqvist and Jake Walman from the St. Louis Blues at the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline. And albeit a small sample size, the pair appear to be quite comfortable in Hockeytown.

In four games for Detroit, Sundqvist has two goals and one assist while averaging 14:59 of ice time. The center collected two points in his Red Wings debut against the Philadelphia Flyers on March 22, tying his highest single-game point total of the season.

PHI@DET: Sundqvist's first goal as a Red Wing

"He's strong on his stick," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said about Sundqvist. "He's very, very smart. He's very good defensively, very good offensively in a sense of winning pucks and being in the right spots."
When asked what he adds to the Wings' lineup, Sundqvist said he hopes to prove his all-around value.
"I think mostly a defensive responsibility but also contributing offensively," Sundqvist said. "It's always been my strong suit, my two-way game, so just trying to help the team best as I can on both ends of the ice."
As for Walman, he's provided necessary depth to a defensive corps currently without injured veterans Marc Staal and Danny DeKeyser. Since joining Detroit, the 26-year-old Walman is averaging 18:09 of ice time.
As he gets more comfortable with Detroit's systems, Walman said he wants to be "tenacious all over the ice."
"Being confident is the big thing for me, confidence and shooting the puck from everywhere," Walman said. "If I'm shooting the puck, it means I'm on my game. I'll do that, I'll skate and help the team win."

According to Blashill, there's a lot to like about Walman's potential.
"I think he's going to be a guy who can end plays early with his skating," Blashill said. "He can be a bit of a defensive weapon."

Red Wings assign Pearson to Grand Rapids

On Monday, the Red Wings assigned Chase Pearson to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The 24-year-old made his NHL debut on March 24 as the Red Wings faced the New York Islanders, and the forward earned a plus-1 rating and three hits. Pearson has skated in 47 games for the Griffins this season, totaling 17 points.
