DENVER --The Detroit Red Wings couldn't catch up after falling behind early in a 6-3 loss to the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche on Monday afternoon at Ball Arena.

Monday's game got away for the Red Wings, who trailed, 5-0, mid-way through the second period. Andrew Copp's fourth goal of the season put Detroit on the board at 18:58 of the middle frame, while Ben Chiarot and David Perron each found the back of the net in the third.
"Five-on-five, I thought we were pretty good tonight," captain Dylan Larkin said. "They got the big line there. The way they roll around the offensive zone, we just gave them too much time and space with the puck. They're gonna make you pay."
Red Wings goalie Ville Husso stopped 17-of-22 shots before being replaced at the start of the final frame by Magnus Hellberg, who made four saves.
The loss dropped Detroit to 18-17-7 overall, and 7-8-4 on the road this season. The Avs improved to 22-17-3 (47 points).
"The good news is we get another crack at it tomorrow," Larkin said. "We're going to Arizona and it's a back-to-back. We get a little bit extra rest tonight, should be getting in at a decent hour. We're gonna be battle-tested and hopefully feeling that when the game starts, our minds bodies are in it because we played today."
NEXT UP:The Red Wings will quickly board a flight to the Grand Canyon State to wrap up a back-to-back, squaring off against the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night at Mullett Arena. Puck drop is set for 9 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MT.
REMINDER:Three remaining players per division - two skaters and one goaltender - will be selected as part of the 2023 NHL All-Star Fan Vote, which is now open at

and closes on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Larkin was named to the initial 32-man roster for the 2023 NHL All-Star Game, which will be held at FLA Live Arena on Saturday, Feb. 4.

QUOTABLE

Head coach Derek Lalonde on Colorado's game-opening goal
"I thought we had a good start. Obviously, we had a d-zone breakdown on the goal. So, I'm sure there's momentum...It's frustrating on a whole in that I don't mind our first period. We obviously had some looks, probably should have had a goal or two. Then we get out of it down, 2-0, which was a little frustrating. Kind of reflective of the whole game."
Larkin on facing the Avs
"It's always a difficult first period coming out and playing here. They're a high-offense team. The first period just didn't go the way we wanted."
Copp on the Red Wings' defense on Monday afternoon
"You gotta be disciplined. We kind of found our way in the (penalty) box and once they get moving around, we played pretty passive in the d-zone a little bit."
