RECAP: Red Wings fall, 5-1, to Maple Leafs in preseason finale

The Detroit Red Wings concluded their preseason schedule with a 5-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena.

Pius Suter scored the lone goal for the Red Wings in the first period. Jussi Olkinuora started in net and made 13 saves on 15 shots before being replaced by Victor Brattstrom, who recorded eight saves on 11 shots in relief.
Detroit finished with a 3-5-0 exhibition record.

Adam Erne's pass from just below the blue line set up Suter, who went top-shelf open the scoring for Detroit. Gustav Lindstrom also recorded an assist on Suter's first tally of the preseason.

William Nylander's shot from the right faceoff circle beat Olkinuora to even the score.
Toronto 2, Detroit 1 (11:55, 2nd period)
Denis Malginm skated in on the break and converted a wrister, giving the Maple Leafs their first lead of the night.
Toronto 3, Detroit 1 (2:12, 3rd period)
Auston Matthews buried a one-timer from the left faceoff circle for a power-play goal.
Toronto 4, Detroit 1 (7:02, 3rd period)
After Alexander Kerfoot's shot was blocked, Nylander collected the rebound and scored on the man advantage, his second tally of the night.
Toronto 5, Detroit 1 (13:49, 3rd period)
Matthews netted his second power-play goal of the period to cap the scoring.

Cossa assigned to Grand Rapids

Prior to Saturday's game, the
Red Wings assigned 19-year-old goaltender Sebastian Cossa to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins. 
Detroit currently has 47 players on its preseason roster, and
has until Monday's 5 p.m. deadline to trim that number to 23.
