DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today assigned right wing Tomas Jurco to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins for conditioning.
Jurco, 23, has missed the entire 2016-17 season so far due to offseason back surgery. The fifth-year pro has skated in 143 games for the Red Wings since making his NHL debut in 2013-14, recording 39 points (15-24-39) and 44 penalty minutes. He was limited to 44 games for Detroit in 2015-16, logging six points (4-2-6). Jurco also skated in a five-game conditioning stint for Grand Rapids last season and racked up nine points (5-4-9), earning AHL Player of the Week honors on Nov. 22, 2015. He has appeared in 111 career games with the Griffins, tallying 69 points (32-37-69) and 40 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-2, 188-lb., forward has also picked up 21 points (13-8-21) in 32 career AHL Calder Cup Playoff games and owns a Calder Cup championship ring from the Griffins' title run in 2013.

Jurco was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the second round (35th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to his professional career, he spent three seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Saint John Sea Dogs and won a 2011 and 2012 QMJHL Championship and a 2011 Canadian Hockey League Memorial Cup championship. In 172 career QMJHL games, Jurco notched 175 points (87-88-175), a plus-126 rating and 78 penalty minutes and added 64 points (26-38-64), a plus-37 rating and 28 penalty minutes in 56 postseason contests. The Kosice, Slovakia, native has also represented his country on the international circuit on several occasions, recording nine points (2-7-9) in 11 games at the 2011 and 2012 IIHF World Junior Championships; scoring one goal in four games at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia; and tallying five points (2-3-5) in eight games at the 2016 IIHF World Championship.
