Trending: Red Wings comeback falls short, lose to Jets, 4-2

WINNIPEG --It's not easy to overcome deficits, especially on the road against a talented team.
After spotting the Winnipeg Jets a 3-0 lead, the Detroit Red Wings fought back to get within a goal thanks to positive special teams play, but couldn't get over the hump, dropping a 4-2 decision at Winnipeg's Bell MTS Place Friday night.

Luke Glendening (shorthanded) and Dennis Cholowski (power play) scored for the Red Wings. Brandon Tanev, Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little and Kyle Connor (empty net) scored for the Jets.
Detroit goaltender Jonathan Bernier had 23 saves. Winnipeg netminder Laurent Brossoit had 33 saves.
The Wings fell to 16-23-7 while the Jets improved to 28-14-2.
Up next for the Wings is the second game of a back-to-back road set, playing Saturday night in Minnesota.
The Jets will host the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

1.Luke Glendening:It had been a while since the Red Wings scored a shorthanded goal. Considering how good the Winnipeg power play is, Detroit wanted to stay out of the box. But after Nick Jensen was called for delay of game midway through the second, Glendening and Filip Hronek sped into the Jets' zone 2-on-1 and Glendening sent Hronek's pass into the left side of the net. It was Glendening's sixth goal and first shorthanded mark of the season. The Wings now have five shorthanded goals. Dylan Larkin has two, Justin Abdelkader and Trevor Daley each have one, along with Glendening. The Wings' last shorthanded goal came Nov. 1 against the New Jersey Devils, with both Abdelkader and Daley getting shorties in that game. Glendening finished with 25 shifts for 14:36, had one shot, was 11-for-18 in face-offs and was even.

We haven't been where we want to be this year and we still got a long way to go but we'll take any building block we can at this point." - Glendening

We just gotta stick with it, just continue to make sure our details in our game are great on a nightly basis and continue to get pucks around the net. 2.Dennis Cholowski:With Mike Green back in the lineup, it helps put the entire defensive corps slot into better positions. Green, who took the bulk of the minutes before his injury, was back at it again Friday night. With Green back quarterbacking one power play, Cholowski helmed the other as he has done all season. With Ben Chiarot in the box for holding, Niklas Kronwall delivered the puck to Cholowski in the right circle and Cholowski had a lot of net to shoot into short-side. It was Cholowski's seventh goal of the season and ninth power-play point, second only to Gustav Nyquist's 10. Frans Nielsen picked up the second assist. Cholowski's parents, Natalie and John, were at the game.
Quotable:"First of all, a good play by Fransie. I think he was looking shot but went back up top to Kronner. Kronner made a great play by faking a one-timer and the goalie went down. I don't think he realized the puck came over to me. I got it, I looked up and I saw a lot of net. I was pretty grateful for that." - Cholowski

I think he went through a stretch where he was giving up a lot of goals that were largely mistakes that he had made. He's played better. He's got better at his gapping. I would say the second goal, there was opportunities where we could of had that puck out and we didn't have it out. The urgency on every play in the National Hockey League is critical and it's hard to be a 20-year-old defenseman in this league. 3. Jonathan Bernier:Bernier, making his first start since Dec. 29 at Dallas, had a rough start and finish to the first period. The puck hopped over Jonathan Ericsson's stick and Tanev scored into the top right corner of the net just 13 seconds into the game. Then with just .4 seconds left in the first, Thomas Vanek tried to block Wheeler's shot from the right circle but the puck instead deflected past Bernier for a 2-0 Jets lead heading into intermission. At 4:51 of the second, Little's shot from the left circle beat Bernier and the Winnipeg lead was 3-0.
   Quotable: "Johnny played good. Bernie played good. He's had a tough go in terms of bounces in my mind. That finds a way to even out. I 100-percent believe he's going to be a big factor in a number of wins as we go through the second half of this year. He's just gotta stay with it. Like our team, he's gotta stay mentally tough. It's a hard challenge and it's one he's gonna have to rise to the occasion." - Blashill
