DENVER -- The script was all but written but then the Colorado Avalanche had to go and spoil it.
Rookie Filip Zadina scored the go-ahead power-play goal at 17:43 of the third period to give the Detroit Red Wings a 3-2 lead Tuesday night at the Pepsi Center.

But the Avalanche pulled the goaltender and Tyson Barrie tied the game just 42 seconds after Zadina scored.
At 2:29 of overtime, Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon scored his team-leading 34th goal to lift his team to a 4-3 victory.
Niklas Kronwall, Danny DeKeyser and Zadina (power play, first NHL goal) scored for the Wings.
J.T. Compher, Mikko Rantanen (power play), Barrie and MacKinnon (overtime) scored for the Avalanche.
Jonathan Bernier, who helped the Avalanche reach the playoffs last season, had 30 saves. Colorado netminder Semyon Varlamov had 20 saves.
The Wings fell to 23-33-10 while the Avalanche improved to 29-26-12.
Up next for the Wings is a quick trip home to play the New York Rangers Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. The Avalanche travel to Dallas to face the Stars on Thursday.
1. Filip Zadina: It really wasn't a question of if Zadina would score in his nine-game stint with the Wings, it was when. When was in the third period in Colorado on the power play. Filip Hronek passed to Zadina in the right circle and Zadina one-timed it past Varlamov. Hronek then bear hugged his Czech countryman in celebration. Thomas Vanek got the second assist. Blashill said Zadina's play throughout the game earned him more ice time. Zadina finished with 21 shifts for 18:16, had a team-high five shots, one hit, one takeaway and was plus-1.

Quotable: "Obviously, it was a great moment, but I will be happier if we will win the game. We were so close, but it wasn't enough. That was great pass from Hroney. He saw me there. We're kind of used to it from GR. It was a great moment but unfortunate we didn't win." -- Zadina
Quotable: "What I like is he's looked more and more dangerous every game. Certainly tonight was his best game. I thought he looked the most dangerous he's looked. The goal, he's real dynamic on the power play. He's looked that way the last three games. I think 5-on-5 he's starting to create more. His shot in the second where he cut to the middle and honestly got a heck of a shot off and Varlamov made a good blocker save. It was a good sign. I think he played 18-plus minutes. It's a good sign for our organization." -- Wings coach Jeff Blashill

Quotable III: "I thought he was good tonight. I thought 5-on-5, too. He skated well and he created a lot of chances by himself. I think he's a shooter, so that's why he's in that spot. He got rewarded tonight. It was great to see for him." -- Vanek
Quotable IV: "Very happy for him. He deserves it. It was nice to see the excitement. We all felt very happy for him. I thought he was good all over the ice. You saw him a lot more tonight than maybe in the past. It's good to see him with the puck. I still think as a team we can be better. We almost got away with one tonight. Bernie played great in net. Unfortunately, we couldn't hang in there." -- Kronwall

  1. Niklas Kronwall:The Wings did not have a ton going on during their power play but did keep the puck in the offensive zone when it expired. Kronwall fired the puck from the high slot and it managed to trickle through Varlamov for a 1-0 Detroit lead at 16:47 of the first period. Vanek and Frans Nielsen assisted. It was Kronwall's first goal since Dec. 20, 2018 at Carolina, snapping a 29-game goalless skid. In 36 career games against the Avalanche, Kronwall has five goals and 14 assists. Kronwall played with Madison Bowey, who appeared to benefit from Kronwall's veteran guidance. Kronwall finished with 26 shifts for 19:10, had two shots, one hit and was plus-1.

Quotable: "We'll obviously take them any way we can. It doesn't really matter who scores. That's how it goes sometimes. That's one area I think we can be better as a unit of defensemen, getting up in the play. Dales (Trevor Daley) had a few opportunities as well, jumping up in the play. Bowes (Bowey) had one as well. That's something we keep emphasizing, getting up in the play, and I thought we had some looks tonight." -- Kronwall
Quotable II: "I went behind the net. Usually I'm looking for either Bert (Tyler Bertuzzi) or Fransie (Frans Nielsen), and then their forwards collapsed really low, so Kronner was all by himself. I figured if I get it through, we'll get a good shot from up top with lots of traffic. It worked out perfect." -- Vanek
3. Danny DeKeyser: Maybe it was just a good night for the Detroit defensemen, who knew they would have to step up in the absence of Mike Green, who is expected to miss 7-10 days with a recurrence of the virus that kept him out of the first nine games of the season. At 2:22 of the third, DeKeyser jumped into the play and drove to the net, where Jacob de la Rose found him for an open right side of the net and a 2-1 Wings lead. It was DeKeyser's fourth goal of the season and first since Feb. 2 at Ottawa. Justin Abdelkader had the second assist. DeKeyser finished with 32 shifts for 23:53, had one shot, one hit, one giveaway, one takeaway, one minor penalty, a team-high five blocked shots and was minus-1.

Quotable: "Great play by de la Rose. Great play. I thought that line, their best period was the third period. I thought they got skating a little better. They didn't get tons of ice time but I thought they got skating a little better. That was a great play by de la Rose." -- Blashill
