The Wings fell to 26-32-11 overall and 13-18-13 on the road while the Sharks improved to 37-23-9 overall and 21-11-3 at home.
Trevor Daley, Gustav Nyquist and Zetterberg scored for Detroit while Joonas Donskoi, Eric Fehr, Kevin Labanc, Timo Meier and Chris Tierney scored for San Jose.
1. Henrik Zetterberg/Gustav Nyquist: At 5:53 of the third, Nyquist passed the puck from behind the net to Zetterberg, who beat San Jose goaltender Martin Jones high glove-side. It was Zetterberg's 10th goal of the season and the 336th of his career, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Ted Lindsay for fifth place in franchise history. Zetterberg also assisted on a goal, giving him 950 career points. Every hockey coach preaches going to the net for success and that's just what Nyquist did at 5:05 of the second period. Daley shot the puck and Jones made the initial save but could not collect the rebound. Tyler Bertuzzi was on the left doorstep and Nyquist the right. Bertuzzi did touch the puck but it was Nyquist who made sure it went into the net for his 17th goal of the season, tying his total from the 2015-16 season.
Quotable: "Personally, it's a big goal, passing Ted, I think I told you guys that before. Ted means a lot to me, so passing him and doing it in this building, too, where I played my first NHL game is a little special." - Zetterberg
Quotable II: "That's pretty impressive by him. Obviously, it's some big, big names up there. He's been so good for so long. We talk about it all the time, but it's worth talking about, because what he's doing is pretty remarkable up there. Obviously fun to be part of that, but he had a lot more without me on the ice. He's done an unbelievable job." - Nyquist
Quotable III: "It's incredible, especially the way he's done it. There's guys in the league who will get points. There's very few guys who will be as good a winner as he's been over his time. He's an excellent, excellent hockey player, but he's done it from the right side of the puck. He's created offense without giving much up. Him teamed with Pavel (Datsyuk) for all those years as a 1-2 punch at center, that's how you win tons of games. You win tons of games with great centers that play two-way hockey like he has. My hat's off to him. That's a heck of a milestone." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill
2. Tyler Bertuzzi: Before the game, Wings coach Jeff Blashill said it was only a matter of time before Bertuzzi recorded a goal. Bertuzzi has had plenty of chances but has been a little snakebit. Although the goals have not come, the points have. Bertuzzi assisted on Daley's goal in the first period and on Nyquist's goal in the second. In fact, Bertuzzi was very close to putting in the rebound right before Nyquist did. Bertuzzi also assisted on Zetterberg's third-period goal, giving him three assists for the game. In his last seven games, Bertuzzi has seven assists. His last goal was Jan. 22 at New Jersey.
Quotable: "I thought Tyler was excellent. I think he's a real bright spot for us. I think he's got a real bright future. I think he can become a heck of a player. He needs to become a little stronger and a little faster. That's going to happen this offseason. I believe he has the determination. He's been hurt that last couple of summers, but he's got poise, he's got hockey sense. He's real good with the puck. I think there's a real bright future there." - Blashill
Quotable II: "I think he's been playing really well since he got up here and I don't know how many games we've played together now with Gus and me. I thought we've been creating a lot of chances but haven't really gotten any results or goals, so it was nice to see we got a few tonight." - Zetterberg
3. Trevor Daley: Since the All-Star break, the Wings have made it a point of emphasis for the defensemen to get more involved offensively. Daley jumped into the play in the Sharks zone and buried Zetterberg's centering pass at 5:01 of the first period, giving the Wings a 1-0 lead. It was Daley's ninth goal of the season, tying the second-most goals of his career for a season, which he also accomplished in 2013-14 with the Dallas Stars. Daley's career best is 16 goals scored in 2014-15 with the Stars. Daley assisted on Nyquist's goal in the second.
Quotable: "I think it's great. We need goals from our D and I think since the all-star break they've really chipped in and scored a lot of goals. Dale's been hot here lately. Hopefully he can keep it up." - Nyquist
Quotable II: "I think our D have been real involved since the All-Star break. Dales has been real hot that way. He's got lots of ability, so it was good for him." - Blashill
