The Capitals and Colorado Avalanche will conclude their season series when they meet for the second time in seven days tonight at Capital One Arena. The Capitals defeated the Avalanche 5-2 on Nov. 15 in Denver, their first win over Colorado since April 18, 2022. Connor McMichael scored two goals in last Friday’s victory and the Capitals held Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar – three of the NHL’s top nine point producers – to zero points. Washington has a record of 48-36-9-1 all-time vs. the Colorado/Quebec franchise.

The Capitals killed off all seven of Utah’s power-play opportunities in their 6-2 win on Nov. 18. It marked the first time Washington was shorthanded seven-plus times and did not allow a power-play goal against since Dec. 21, 2019. The Capitals have killed off nine straight opposing power-play opportunities dating back to Nov. 15 and 23 of 24 (95.8%) since Nov. 2. This season, Washington ranks third in the NHL in penalty kill percentage (87.7%) and have allowed the third fewest power-play goals against (7). The Capitals, who have scored two shorthanded goals, also rank tied for second in shorthanded goal differential (-5).

Martin Fehervary (3:19) and John Carlson (3:04) lead the Capitals in shorthanded ice time per game and have been on the ice for just five power-play goals against, tied for the seventh fewest in the NHL among skaters with at least 55 total minutes of shorthanded ice time.
