The two-time Stanley Cup champion discussed his excitement at joining the Sens, being part of the team's future, acting as a mentor to the organization's other goaltenders and much more.
On his feelings on the trade and joining the Senators
Definitely mixed emotions for sure. It's my first time being traded so it's something new for me. I had a lot of good years in Pittsburgh obviously so I'll always miss it there but definitely a ton of excitement. Ottawa is a place I'm pretty familiar with. I live only a few hours drive away now. I played in the OHL and played in Ottawa lots growing up. I'm from Thunder Bay so I am an Ontario kid. It presents a really good opportunity for me and my family and I see a really good fit there for sure.
On the upside of the Sens moving forward
I see a team that's heading in the right direction and heading there quickly. I paid a bit of attention to what happened in the draft and this is a young team stacked with talent and heading absolutely in the right direction and a team anybody would be excited to be a part of and a team that has a really bright future. I see a really good fit there for me being a bit of an older guy I guess and I feel like I have a lot to bring to a team like that and everybody should be really excited about the future of this team.
On being a leader on the team at age 26
I'm excited for that opportunity. I have a lot to offer. I learned a lot of lessons from some legends of the game in Pittsburgh and some great leaders so I hope that I can bring some of that to the room in Ottawa. I feel like I've been through a lot already in this league at a pretty young age but I feel that experience again will serve me well.
On working with Sens goaltending coach Pierre Groulx
I've heard great things about Pierre. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday and I think he will definitely help me. The biggest thing for me is consistency and I think Pierre can be a big help for me in that regard.
On how motivated he is
I'm always looking to prove myself every time I step on the ice and keep a mindset that I bring everything I have on any given night. Sometimes it'll go really well and sometimes it might not but that's just the ups and downs of being a goalie in general. But I really believe that if you maintain that level of preparation and you bring the same attitude to the rink every day over a long period of time the results are going to take care of themselves. That's my focus is to just bring that level of compete, bring that level of preparation and to do it consistently and the results will take care of themselves.
On goalies that have mentored him in the past, working with the goalies in the Sens organization and being a mentor to them
I see a good fit for me in that role. Marc-Andre Fleury was a huge mentor for me, a guy that I was lucky to play with. I had plenty of great goalie partners back in junior and guys that I learned a lot from and I definitely hope that I can be that for younger guys in the future. That's the circle of goaltending and goalies in particular have a special bond and one that we always stick together so I really look forward to that and building relationships with all the guys around me.
On working with a young defensive corps in Ottawa
As a goalie I think it's important to keep the same approach and try to be a rock back there and try to always keep your demeanor in the right place. I think when guys look back at their goalie they should feel comfortable and confident. That's the kind of demeanor that I try to bring no matter what the scenario is and I think that's really important as a goalie and maintaining that kind of approach night in and night out and that's what I intend to do.
