Murphy returns to Ottawa following time with the Buffalo Sabres, where he spent three seasons as the team's director of scouting. Prior his time with Buffalo, he spent four years as a professional scout for the Senators and three years as a scout for the Phoenix Coyotes.
"Rob's hiring represents another important step in helping us rebuild," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "He brings with him a wealth of hockey knowledge which will be of great benefit to our staff; he'll be relied upon to help us make decisions on potential trades, free agents and waiver reviews and will primarily spend his time scouting both NHL and AHL hockey. We made a commitment to add to our staff following last season and Rob's addition is a significant part of that."
Murphy spent seven seasons as a National Hockey League player. He was selected in the second round (24th overall) of the 1987 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks and played five seasons with the Canucks before being selected by the Senators in the expansion draft that preceded their inaugural 1992-93 season.
After playing 44 games during the team's first year in Ottawa, Murphy later signed with the Los Angeles Kings to finish his NHL career, before completing his tenure in professional hockey playing in both the minor leagues and in Europe.
