A native of Yekatarinburg, Russia, Sokolov, 20, spent the 2019-20 campaign, his third major junior season, skating for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Cape Breton Eagles and led the team in scoring with 92 points (46 goals, 46 assists) while recording 42 penalty minutes over 52 regular-season games. He also appeared in each of Russia's seven contests at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic where he tallied four points (three goals, one assist) and 16 penalty minutes in helping his country earn a silver medal.
"To Egor's credit, he's worked especially hard for this," said Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "Despite initially being undrafted, he applied himself to improve many facets of his game to the point where he led the Quebec league in goals last season. We were pleased to be able to select him where we did last month and look forward to seeing his career progress."
Over three full seasons with Cape Breton, Sokolov, who was selected by the Senators in the second round (61st overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft, recorded 191 points (97 goals, 94 assists) and 105 penalty minutes over 184 regular-season games. He also tallied eight points (five goals, three assists) and six penalty minutes over 16 QMJHL post-season contests. He is eligible to play with one of the Eagles, the American Hockey League's Belleville Senators or with Ottawa (NHL) next season.
