draftrecap-NHL

The Senators went into the 2018 NHL Draft looking to add character players without sacrificing skill and after their eight selections were all made over the weekend, the management and scouting team believe they've done just that.

There was also an emphasis on skating and speed upon reviewing their final selections as well as a coincidental relationship with prospects either from or committed to going the NCAA route.
Now that the dust has settled in Dallas, here's a quick recap of the Sens' 2018 NHL Draft haul...

What our GM and scouts say...
"We've talked in the last few days about character, accountability and leadership and we know Brady Tkachuk brings a lot of those elements to the table. We feel that he will be an integral part of our team as soon as this upcoming September." - Sens general manager Pierre Dorion
"He brings a lot pieces to his game. He brings offence, size and character. He's good in all three zones. He's a smart player and he can make plays. At the end of the day, he drags you into the fight whether you want to be there or not." - Sens chief amateur scout Trent Mann

Round 1, Pick #26 | D | Okotoks (AJHL)

What our scouts say...
"Everyone talks that defenceman that plays in the NHL right now and he exemplifies that. He's a strong skater, he has good pucks skills and he has an NHL shot. He just brings a lot of skills that puck-moving defenceman have to have now. He's going to be able to move the puck up the ice for the Ottawa Senators and hopefully sooner rather than later." - Sens chief amateur scout Trent Mann

Round 2, Pick #48 | D | Penticton (BCHL)

What our scouts say...
"Jonathan is a highly competitve, puck-moving defenceman who is really smart with the puck and sees the ice very well. He played in Penticton in the BCHL last season and he's committed to North Dakota next year with Bernard-Docker. They knew each other growing up and have played together a few times so they'll be quite familiar with each other at school next year."

Round 4, Pick #95 | C | USA U-18 (NTDP)

What our scouts say...
"He's a tremendous skater and his work ethic is very good. He's got a good stick, he can make plays and I really like his heart and determination. He's going to Miami-Ohio University where I believe he'll be a top 6 player for them. His dad was a tremendous skater as well and as Jonathan fills out and gets stronger he'll be exciting to watch."

Round 5, Pick #126 | LW | Langley (BCHL)

What our scouts say...
"He's committed to New Hampshire and they're really excited to get him there where it's expected he'll play an important role. He plays bigger than he is and he's relentless. He plays with a lot of energy and pace, high compete and has a nose for the net. He can not only score big goals but he's got great vision and can make plays too"

Round 6, Pick #157 | G | Cape Breton (QMJHL)

What our scouts say...
"He's a big, athletic kid that kind fits the profile of the goalies that are playing in the NHL right now. Over the year, he's grown quite a bit in his maturity level and how he approaches the game. He has needed to adapt. There's lots of upside." - Sens chief amateur scout Trent Mann

Round 7, Pick #188 | LW | Janesville (NAHL)

What our scouts say...
"He can shoot the puck, he scores and he's got to get a little bit quicker. We've always really liked him. He's been around a few years. He's developed and he's getting stronger. He's got great speed, quickness and agility." - Sens amateur cout Bob Janecyk

Round 7, Pick #194 | RW | Minnetonka (HIGH-MN)

What our scouts say...
"The competitiveness jumps off the ice for you. He's an extremely competitive kid that's going to run through a wall for you and do whatever you ask of him. He's a winner that played on the state championship team in Minnesota this year and the type of player that you want." - Sens amateur scout Dan Boeser
