SAN JOSE -- Bo Horvat had a goal and two assists for the New York Islanders, who handed the San Jose Sharks their ninth straight loss with a 7-2 win at SAP Center on Thursday.

Brock Nelson had three assists, and Anders Lee had a goal and an assist for the Islanders (28-20-14), who have won five straight. Ilya Sorokin made 23 saves.

"It's a great win for us," Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. "It’s never easy. These guys have nothing to lose and [were] pretty loose, and our guys did a good job."

Thomas Bordeleau and Mike Hoffman scored, and Magnus Chrona made 26 saves in his second start of the season for the Sharks (15-40-4), whose last win was on Feb. 15, 6-3 against the Calgary Flames.

"I actually thought our first period was pretty good," Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro said. "I think the second period really hurt us tonight. We fell behind and got too loose and let our emotions get the best of us there in the second."

Noah Dobson put New York ahead 1-0 just 19 seconds into the first period when his wrist shot deflected off Sharks defenseman Kyle Burroughs’ skate past Chrona.

"Goes off a skate, when it rains it pours," Sharks coach David Quinn said. "That being said, I didn't mind our first period. I know we went down 2-0, but I didn't mind our first period."

Alexander Romanov made it 2-0 at 18:31 with a slap shot from the left point through traffic.

Bordeleau cut it to 2-1 at 2:45 of the second period when a William Eklund shot from the right circle deflected in off his skate on the power play. The forward was recalled from San Jose of the American Hockey League on Wednesday and played in his first NHL game since Oct. 26.

"It hit my skate and went in, just right spot, right time," Bordeleau said. "It felt good to get the first one in a while out of the way."

Horvat made it 3-1 at 11:24 when he picked up the puck at the goal line, skated to the slot and beat Chrona with a wrist shot.

"When they got that power-play goal, instead of sitting back and letting them take it to us, we had a really good push there in the second half of the second," Horvat said.

Hoffman made it 3-2 at 11:49, putting in a centering pass from Givani Smith in front on the rush.

Kyle MacLean pushed it to 4-2 at 12:04 with a wrist shot from a tight angle below the left circle.

Mathew Barzal made it 5-2 at 14:21. He gloved down a clearing attempt at the blue line, did a give-and-go with Nelson and beat Chrona with a snap shot from the right circle.

Sebastian Aho increased the lead to 6-2 at 16:25 with a snap shot from the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Horvat.

Lee scored 14 seconds into a four-minute power play when his pass from behind the net redirected off Sharks defenseman Jan Rutta’s skate for the 7-2 final at 8:08 of the third.

NOTES: Dobson's goal was the third-fastest tally to start a game by an Islanders defenseman behind Nick Leddy (13 seconds on Nov. 5, 2016) and Denis Potvin (16 seconds on March 11, 1981). ... The Islanders and Sharks combined for three goals in a span of 40 seconds in the second period. ... Nelson notched the 29th multiassist game of his NHL career.
