Selected in the 10th round (198th overall) of the 1988 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues, Hedican produced 294 points (55 goals, 239 assists) in 1,039 games across 17 seasons. His career spanned coast-to-coast as he played professionally for the St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and Anaheim Ducks. He played in his 1,000th National Hockey League game on September 6, 2008 as a member of the Anaheim Ducks against the St. Louis Blues.
In 108 playoff games, Hedican registered four goals, 22 assists and a plus-10 rating. He won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.
Hedican represented the United States on numerous occasions, including several World Championships (1997, 1999 and 2001) and a couple Olympic (1992 and 2006) appearances.
After announcing his retirement in 2009, Hedican joined the Sharks Radio Network for the start of the 2014-15 season and just recently finished his third season with the team. Hedican works alongside venerable play-by-play announcer Dan Rusanowsky (
