The Devils are on the road on Thursday for their regular season finale, visiting the Capitals to close out their 82-game regular season.
Here are some observations from the game...
- It was a nice added touch by Lindy Ruff to put both Hughes brothers in the starting lineup for Luke's first NHL game. When the younger Hughes was announced as in the starting lineup, the Prudential Center crowd went absolutely wild, and no those aren't "Boo's" you're hearing, it's "Luuuuke".
Jack was asked about the ovation that Luke received from being in the starting lineup and had a great quote that only a big brother could come up with.
"I think he had a louder (ovation) than I did when they said Luke Hughes was starting. I see where I rank!"
As soon as the puck dropped on the game, the Hughes brothers, Quinn included, became the first trio of first-round drafted brothers to play in the NHL
"It's a huge accomplishment for my parents," Jack said, "Three boys to play in the show, that's hard work, man. It just shows how well a job they did for us as people first, but players as well."
- After being hit by Brad Marchand in Boston over the weekend, Michael McLeod did not play tonight, the first game he's missed all season. That leaves just Dougie Hamilton, Dawson Mercer, Jesper Bratt, and Tomas Tatar as the only players to have played in all 81 games, with one more to go.
- The scoring opened with a hard-working, gritty type of goal with Miles Wood, Jesper Boqvist and Nathan Bastian on a line together. From center ice Bastian flipped the puck into the far corner where Miles Wood shot it on Levi from a difficult angle, with the puck ricocheting straight to Boqvist, who waisted it past Devon Levi.
Boqvist ties his career-high in goals with his 10th of the season.
- For Dawson, with one game to go this regular season, he has appeared in every single game since his NHL debut last season.
- Nico Hischier had a two-assist night, bringing his season total up to79points this season. One more game to go to become an 80-point player. The Devils captain has had career totals all around this season with 31 goals and 48 assists.
- Miles Wood finished with a two-point night, his sixth multi-point game of the season, which sets a new career-high for the 27-year-old.
- Nathan Bastian had a three-assist night.
- Luke Hughes shared the story of how he was told he would be playing tonight:
"(Lindy Ruff) just pulled me into his office, showed me some video and said hope you're ready to play some left and some right and I was like oh okay, he said did you hear me, and I said yeah. It was awesome."
- For just the third time in his NHL coaching career, Lindy Ruff has coached a team to 51 or more wins in a season. The last time Ruff coached a team to over 50 wins was in 2006-07 with the Buffalo Sabres when they reached 53 wins. In 2005-06 he coached the Sabres to 52 wins.
The Devils' most recent win surpasses the 50 victories that Ruff had coached his Dallas Stars team to in 2015-16, putting this coaching season in his top three for wins.
- During the first intermission, there was some exciting news announced! Scott Gomez will be joining the Devils live stream broadcasts with intermission reports alongside Catherine Bogart and also appearing on the Devils Post-Game show. Tune in after every Devils post-season game to catch Gomez do what he does best... be a character we all love and adore!
