1. US

There were expected to be some hiccups for the Flames this season given our new pandemic world.
The team experienced one of those Wednesday night when - just hours before puck drop - their tilt in Vancouver was postponed after two Canucks players and one coach entered the COVID Protocol list.
"It's an odd type of feeling," said Milan Lucic on Thursday. "When you go through your game day and prepare and all that type of stuff, and then all of a sudden, you find out 40 minutes before warmup that the game was cancelled, you don't know what to do because you've bottled up all this energy that you were about to let loose during the game.
"I had a similar experience when the Boston Marathon bombing happened, so it's not my first time going through something like this. Obviously, two completely different scenarios, but two game-day cancellations around the same time. It sucks when you have all that energy built up and ready to go, but you understand the circumstances and move on from it."

"You've bottled up all this energy"

The team went back to their hotel after the announcement, had a bite to eat, and then got up Thursday morning and flew out earlier than planned to Edmonton, where they got in an afternoon practice at Rogers Place.
"I think the number-one thing is when it happens, make sure you have a good plan in place as soon as you can so you're as efficient as possible," said head coach Darryl Sutter. "We made a decision to get out of Vancouver as soon as we can, as soon as we can get our pilots and make sure we've got our testing set up here. And then Edmonton obliged, getting us some ice today, so it worked. We were able to fly here early this morning and the players and staff, and everyone was more comfortable coming here this morning."

"The NHL has done an awesome job"

It was announced later Thursday that all Canucks games through April 6 have been postponed, with the team able to return to game action April 8 if test results allow.
The Flames are coming off a 5-1 loss in their last outing, dropping the rubber match of a three-game set with the visiting Winnipeg Jets on Monday.
Matthew Tkachuk said the loss was tough to swallow but the team had to park it and look ahead and the chance to string together some wins as they drive towards securing a playof berth.
"Time's ticking," said the left-winger. "We've been saying this for the past however long, but time's really, really ticking and we've got to be stringing a bunch together.
"Frustration, you can't let it affect the rest of your season, because if we have any hope, any chance, of stringing any together (wins) against all these teams that are in front of us, we have to dig down deep. I certainly have to be a hell of a lot better than I was tonight. The games where we're playing well, we're playing with a lot of of energy, playing with a lot of pace, playing with a lot of physicality. We have to do that in the last 20 games. I don't even know if we have that many left."

2. THEM

The Oilers are returning from an eventful road trip.
Or, perhaps more fittingly, less event-ful.
Edmonton headed east for a roadie that was supposed to start with three games against the Canadiens in Montreal on March 22, 24 and 26, but they were postponed after a positive COVID test in the Canadiens dressing room.
So, the team hung out in their hotel rooms for a three days with practices mixed in, before playing three games in four days: falling 4-3 in OT to the Leafs Saturday in TO, then beating them 3-2 in OT Monday, before doubling back to Montreal for a 4-0 loss to the Habs Tuesday.
All totalled, they spent 10 days away for those three tilts before returning to the Alberta capital.
When asked Thursday about finally spending some time in their own beds, Leon Draisaitl agreed the few days at home have been welcome.
"Ya, it's really nice," he said. "Obviously not the trip we were expecting or hoping for, but that's just part of being able to play at this time of the year. Everyone is going through different things, so this is not ideal for us but something we have - or had - to work through. It's definitely nice to be home."
Coach Dave Tippett was asked the same question.
"Hopefully it got us back some energy," he said. "I don't know if it was so much physical energy, but mental energy. You go on the road for that long and you're kind of locked in a hotel, it wears on you a little bit. So, hopefully we got home, and got a little energy back, we had a good practice today, so hopefully that we get some of that zip back in our game we were missing last game."
Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Artturi Lehkonen and Brendan Gallagher staked out the homeside to a 3-0 lead in that loss in La Belle Province, Tomas Tatar adding a second-period tally to round out the scoring.
Kotkaniemi's goal came just 18 seconds into the game to set the tone for the well-rested Habs team which hadn't played in 10 days with four games total postponed.
Carey Price made just 17 saves for the shutout.
"There's no excuses," Oilers defenceman Adam Larsson said after the loss. "We expected a tough game today, a hardworking team that's been sitting, resting for a long time. This stuff happens throughout the year, so it's nothing to get too riled up about."
Draisaitl said Thursday that the outing is now in the team's rearview mirror.
"Those nights happen," he said. "They can't happen over and over again. You have to park it. You take the negative out it, you learn from it, I mean, not much positive in that game, but you just regroup and kind of reset and go back at it tomorrow."
Oilers.comreported that forward Tyler Ennis was placed on waivers earlier Thursday and did not participate in practice, while goaltender Alex Stalock was on the ice with his new club.

3. THIS, THAT & THE OTHER

This:Elias Lindholm has 26 points (15+11) in 24 career games vs Edmonton ... That: Flames captain Mark Giordano is one point shy of hitting 500 in his career. He is also seven points shy of passing Gary Roberts for seventh in franchise scoring. ... The Other: Milan Lucic is the only play in the two team's history to register a fighting major for each team against the other in the Battle of Alberta.

4. PLAYERS TO WATCH

Flames - Noah Hanifin
The Flames defenceman has collected three helpers in the team's last three games and is playing some excellent hockey at both ends of the ice. He'll have a big role tonight to try and contain the potent Oilers attack.
Oilers - Connor McDavid
Unfortunately, when you play the Oilers, it's always about McDavid. He has 63 points this season - the Oilers have scored 122 goals. The math is pretty clear. The Edmonton captain has been held to just three assists in his last three outings, but had three goals in two games against the Jets prior to that.
He leads his team with six goals and 14 points in the six outings against the Flames this campaign.

5. QUOTABLE

"You always get asked about the schedule or the games remaining or what you have to do to make the playoffs. That's a constant and those are good questions, but in the back of your mind, it's day-to-day. You don't look at the trip, you look at tomorrow. I always say today is for tomorrow and that's what you plan for."
- Head coach Darryl Sutter on focusing on the present
