The Flames dropped their first contest of the season on Thursday, as the visiting Sabres skated to a 6-3 win at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Andrew Mangiapane struck first but Buffalo rattled off three straight goals later in the first period and didn't look back.
Trevor Lewis and Nikita Zadorov had the other Calgary tallies. Zadorov was also a physical force all night, littering the ice with Sabres players en route to a team-high six hits.
Jacob Markstrom started the tilt but was replaced by Dan Vladar to start the second period and he finished out the night. Notable was the absence of Noah Hanifin, who was sidelined. Connor Mackey drew into the lineup in his sted.
Earlier in the day, Vladar had signed a two-year contract extension with the club. He spoke more Friday about the deal and Flames TValso chatted with goaltending coach Jason LaBarbera.
"You're obviously excited for him," he said. "And he deserves it."

The 'Canes also suffered their first loss of the season Thursday night in Edmonton, falling 6-4 to the Oilers.
They, too, opened the campaign with three straight victories: 4-1 over the Jackets, 2-1 against the Sharks, and 5-1 over the Kraken.
Andrei Svechnikov had a hat-trick and Martin Necas also scored up the QEII, but the Oilers never trailed, having leads of 1-0 after the first and 3-2 after the second.
Frederik Andersen made 27 saves in the loss for Carolina.
"It's fun to score a hat-trick, but it's tough when you're losing," Svechnikov told NHL.com. "I think my teammates made nice plays for me, and my job is to be a shooter, and that's what I was doing today. I just shot it on the net and tried to score some goals, but it was tough to lose this one for sure."
Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour said his team needed more players contributing on the night.
"(Svechnikov) was pretty dominant. He was our one guy. That line was good, he was really good, but we didn't have much from anyone else," he said. "I thought it wasn't enough. We gave them two goals, and you just can't hand teams goals, especially this team. That's the difference in the game for me.
"I think we got what we deserved in this game, but there were a couple of goals that we'd like to have back."
IMPRESSIVE COMPANY: Nazem Kadri (1-4-5 in 4 GP) recorded an assist and became the sixth player to begin his career with the Flames with a four-game point from the start of the season. The others: Phil Housley (7 GP in 1994-95), Sergei Makarov (7 GP in 1989-90), Sean Monahan (5 GP in 2013-14), Kevin LaVallee (4 GP in 1980-81) and Kent Nilsson (4 GP in 1979-80).
THAT'S OUR COACH: Darryl Sutter will coach his 1,402nd NHL game tonight moving him past Ron Wilson for the ninth most games coached in NHL history. Sutter's next move up the ranks will be in 46 games when he matches Dick Irvin, four-time Stanley Cup Champion as a coach, at 1,448 later this season.
Video: "They gotta shoot pucks more."
HUBY DO: Jonathan Huberdeau has recorded four assists in four games with his new team. Huberdeau lead the NHL with 85 assists last season, an NHL record for the most assists in a season by a left winger. Three of Huberdeau's four assists have come on the power play as he rides a two-game point streak (0-3 - 3).

Flames- Elias Lindholm
While he has only faced off against his former team six times, Lindholm has been very effective vs. the Canes: two goals, 5 points, and 17 shots on net.
Video: "Need to have a good game to get two points"
Hurricanes- Andrei Svechnikov
Battling for the league lead in goals and currently pacing his team with eight tallies, Svechnikov has been putting on a clinic so far this season. He has 18 shots which has him clipping along at a mind-boggling 33.3 shooting percentage. No, that's not remotely sustainable over the course of a season but right now, it shows how hot his hands are.
Rasmus Andersson notched career assist number 99 on Thursday. Andersson, the Flames 2015 second-round pick, would become the 15th Flames defenceman to post 100 assists in his career with the Flames in franchise history.
