  1. US

The Flames are coming off a pivotal win, beating up on their provincial rivals Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome prior to leaving for this three-game eastern road swing.
Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Elias Lindholm and Mark Giordano tallied during a four-goal second period, with Brett Ritchie adding one in the third period en route to a 5-0 victory over the Oilers.
Jacob Markstrom got the shutout, turning aside 17 shots as the Flames defence smothered the Oilers attack, blanked Edmonton's second-ranked powerplay on two chances, and contained the two-headed monster that is Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
"We're not in a spot we want to be, but tonight's a start and it gives us a chance to build," Monahan said. "We needed to win a game. Now we have a chance to build on that. We have to get ready here for our next one."
Gaudreau and Monahan - frequent partners in crime over the years - were put on different lines, No. 13 skating with Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk, and No. 23 centring Dillon Dube and Andrew Mangiapane.
The rejigged trios were effective at generating goals, something the Flames have struggled with of late. They were getting plenty of chances every outing, but failing to capitalize.
Also worth noting was a change on the blueline, with Giordano paired with Chris Tanev.
The hope is Saturday was a breakout for the team, as they emphatically flung the monkey off their back.
Since that win, the team dealt two of their regulars - Sam Bennett and David Rittich prior to Monday's trade deadline. Bennett went to the Panthers while Rittich landed with the Leafs, a team he's played extremely well against this season. There is a chance he may start tonight against his old team.
Flames GM Brad Treliving told media Monday that the trades were in the best interest of the club and they are still very much committed to chasing down a playoff spot.
"From a media perspective, you want to define it easily as buying or selling," Treliving said. "Obviously, when you're in a real good playoff spot, you usually aren't taking anything off your roster. When you're not in a good playoff spot, you more than not looking to see the value of expiring contracts and whether there's interest, or what the market will bear.
"The other piece, is I think I was on both sides. We looked at acquiring players here today - certainly not necessarily from a rental basis or expiring-contract basis, but if there were things that could help us now, and if there were things with term moving forward, certainly we explored all avenues.
"I had a hand in both pools today.
"This is what transpired."

2. CONGRATS, MILAN!

Tonight will mark Milan Lucic's 1,000th NHL game, a historic milestone for any NHL player.

to him talk about the accomplishment on the latest edition of the Firestarter Podcast.
Originally drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round (50th overall) of the 2006 draft and coming off a 2007 Memorial Cup win with the Vancouver Giants, Lucic played 566 games with the Bruins. He's also spent time with LA (81 games), Edmonton (243) and played 109 games here in Calgary. He has 213 career goals, 537 points and 1,161 penalty minutes. His career highlight was winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 as a member of the Boston Bruins in his hometown of Vancouver.
Others playing their 1,000th as a Flame include: Lanny McDonald, Dave Lowry, Craig Berube, Martin Gelinas, Owen Nolan, Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow, Craig Conroy, Olli Jokinen and Matt Stajan.

3. THEM

The Leafs are playing their second game in as many nights, falling 4-2 to the Canadiens in Montreal on Monday.
The Habs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period off goals from Tomas Tatar and Nick Suzuki. Auston Matthews scored his league-leading 32nd goal and John Tavares notched his 13th to tie it up in the second, but Josh Anderson tallied the game-winner with less than four minutes to go in the middle stanza.
Tatar scored late in the third period to finish it out.
Jack Campbell - who had won 11 straight to start the season, an NHL record - made 21 saves in the loss.
"There will come a time when I can look back at it, but right now I just want to move on from this one and be ready to go next time," Campbell said.
It was a frustrating night for the North Division leaders.
"We just weren't ready to go today, and that's my job," Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. "The coach's job is to get the team ready to play. We weren't ready to play, so that one falls on me."
The Leafs and Flames met twice on April 4 & 5, the Flames falling 4-2 and 5-3.

3. THIS, THAT & THE OTHER

This:Sean Monahan registered the game-winning goal on Saturday vs. Edmonton. It is his 44th GWG in his career which moves him ahead of Joe Nieuwendyk for third most in franchise history. He trails only Jarome Iginla (83) and Theo Fleury (53) ... That:Mark Giordano had a goal and helper against the Oilers on Saturday night. It was the 90th multi-point game of his career. Only three Flames defencemen have had more in franchise history: Al MacInnis (213), Gary Suter (137) and Paul Reinhart (124) ... The Other:Darryl Sutter coached his 1,300th game on April 10 vs. Edmonton.

4. PLAYERS TO WATCH

Flames - Johnny Gaudreau
The wizard was waving his wand Saturday, his wrister from a tough angle against the Oilers a thing of beauty, a slight pause before snapping it shortside in a tight hole, up-and-over the glove and shoulder of Mike Smith.
However, his pass to set up Lindholm was arguably more impressive, as he cocked his stick and sold the shot to everyone on the ice before shifting at the final second to tap a pass from Giordano right into the slot onto the tape of his centre, who snapped it five-hole.
Leafs - Auston Matthews
All the guy does is score - a lot and often.
As mentioned above, he tallied his 32nd goal last night, a sizeable lead on the field with Mikko Rantanen and Connor McDavid tied for second at 23. The former No. 1 overall pick had a pair of goals the last time these two teams played.

5. QUOTABLE

"Today's a day on the calendar where there's a deadline for transactions up until the season's done. We did things we felt were prudent here today. We felt if we were going to make these moves, these moves weren't going to be available to us beyond today. We did do that and it doesn't signal anything other than we had some business to get done today and we got it done.
"We'll deal with the off-season in the off-season.
"I stress again, we've got 15 games to go here."
- Flames GM Brad Treliving, speaking Monday, on his trade-deadline deals
