1. LAST TIME OUT

The Flames opened their Covid-expanded regular-season Battle of Alberta series with the Oilers by beating them 6-4 on Feb. 6.
Edmonton, however, won the next three.
So, Monday night's 4-3 victory was important for many reasons:
1. They beat their provincial rivals;
2. They gained some valuable ground in the standings;
3. They won their third straight game and are undefeated under new head coach Darryl Sutter (speaking of, listen to our new Firestarter Podcastwith Ron and Rich Sutter talking about their brother's new role here);
4. They faced down adversity to score the game-winner after Edmonton had tied up the game in the third period.
"We have to take steps to get better," said Sutter Tuesday after practice. "You're not going to take big ones, it's little ones. We've seen little ones. Last night we were by no means perfect or (had our) A-Game, but I do think that we showed a lot of composure and resilience. Edmonton comes back and ties it 3-3 and then we score the winner. I think, we, against a team like that - we can play better, but I think that's what we showed last night. Every game has been something different."
But they can't afford to spend too much looking in the rearview mirror. It was an important win but now it's time to focus on tnight and the rematch with Edmonton, two more big points (or four, you could argue) on the line as the Flames continue their resurgence.
"The balance is pretty easy and I'm very upfront and honest about it and break it down," said Sutter of pointing out the positive and negatives to his team's play Monday as they strive to get better. "Meet with the guys today as we did, go through it and find ways to get better and find ways to improve and make sure we understand of what we have to put into the game in terms of our preparation to win hockey games. The schedule is so compact that you've got to move on in a hurry in games, you've got to take what you can in games and move on to the next one."
Noah Hanifin notched the game-winner Monday, while Dillon Dube, Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane also scored for Calgary, which improved to 14-12-3.
Jacob Markstrom was impressive between the pipes with 28 saves.

2. THE OTHER SIDE

The Oilers hit the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome Tuesday.
According to EdmontonOilers.com, Kyle Turris and Zack Kassian practiced with the club. Connor McDavid, Mike Smith, Jujhar Khaira and Tyson Barrie did not participate in the skate.
Khaira left Monday's game after being knocked down by a hard punch in a fight with Brett Ritchie and didn't return.
"He seems alright," said Edmonton coach Dave Tippett. "He's listed as day-to-day. We'll see where he is tomorrow morning. He didn't skate today but he's around the dressing room and seems alright."

3. THIS, THAT & THE OTHER

This:Calgary has now gone five straight games without giving up a powerplay goal against, going 9/9. They have only allowed one powerplay goal against in the last seven games, going 15/16 for .938% ... That: Elias Lindholm has 25 points (14+11) in 23 career games vs Edmonton ... The Other: The boys had a little fun with their socks at practice Tuesday to support a good cause. See below.

4. PLAYERS TO WATCH

Flames - Andrew Mangiapane
The guy is a human buzz saw.
He goes 100% every shift, throwing his body around and making life difficult on the opposition with his unrelenting, tenacious style of play. He combines that with a great shot, top-notch hockey IQ, and a penchant for getting himself open to make plays. He scored an absolute gem in Monday's win and added a helper on the game-winner. He leads the Flames with 12 even-strength points since Feb. 1.

Oilers - Leon Draisaitl
It's the age-old 'pick your poison' when it comes to the Oilers.
Draisaitl and Connor McDavid stir the drink in Edmonton, playing on a line together to start Monday's tilt but being split up again when the Oilers offence struggled to find their rhythm and generate shots. The big forward scored in the third period to tie the game - off a pass from McDavid - and is now tied with the Edmonton captain in the team goal-scoring lead with 17.

5. QUOTABLE

"I guess it's a playoff mentality, but the bottom line is that it's a big uphill climb and we're just trying to get better and at the same time, get our identity back as a team. If that's a playoff mentality, so be it. But quite honestly, the way the division is this year and the schedule is, you're pretty much in that mindset or should have been from the start of the year. If we can re-capture that mentality, then so be it, but I'm more focused about the identity part of it and playing up to what your skill-set has for you.
