The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired goaltender Mike Smith from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for UFA Chad Johnson, unsigned prospect Brandon Hickey and a conditional 3rd round draft pick.
Smith has played the past six seasons with Arizona/Phoenix, posting a .914 save percentage in 55 games last year. The Kingston, ON native was originally drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 5th round of the 2001 NHL Draft. Smith played his first two NHL seasons in Dallas before a trade to Tampa Bay in 2008. After four years with the Lightning, he signed as a UFA with Phoenix in 2011. In his first season in Phoenix he played 67 regular season games and went on to post a .944 save percentage in the playoffs as the Coyotes reached the Western Conference Final for the first time in franchise history. The 6'4", 215lb goaltender has played 474 career games posting a 2.70 GAA and a .913 save percentage.
Smith has won a gold medal on two occasions, representing Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics and at the 2015 World Championship as Canada's starting goalie, going 10-0 through the tournament.
