It was a back-and-forth affair that fell short for the Flames.
Calgary had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but Connor McDavid scored on the powerplay in the third as the Flames fell 3-2 to the Oilers Friday night in Edmonton.

Michael Stone and Matthew Tkachuk scored for Calgary, while Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves.
The Flames fell to 16-19-3, while the Oilers are now 23-14-1.
Mikael Backlund missed the game and was listed as day-to-day, with Chris Tanev wearing the 'A' in his absence.
Juuso Valimaki and Dillon Dube both drew back into the lineup for the Flames.
The Oilers came out with a hard press, generating early chances. Leon Draisaitl - second to McDavid in the NHL scoring race with 54 points - had a lovely opportunity in tight after a turnover but fired it just wide with Markstrom in good position.
Johnny Gaudreau charged up and caused a turnover at the Calgary blueline, poking the puck past Oilers defenceman Tyson Barrie and skating in on a partial breakaway, trying to go five-hole but former Flame Mike Smith slammed his pads shut.
Barrie - who got tied up with Brett Ritchie on the backcheck - went crashing into Smith after the save, the pair ending up along the end boards after the collision.
A prolonged Oilers possession in the Flames zone led to Rasmus Andersson being whistled for a hold on McDavid with 9:30 to play in the first period. On the man-up, the Oilers captain fed the puck to Draisaitl who redirected a shot in the slot near the blue paint on a Grade-A chance but Markstrom made a big stop.
Calgary's impressive PK killed it off, limiting the chances from Edmonton's fifth-ranked powerplay, which came into the game clipping along at 25.9%.
Stone then opened the scoring when he unloaded a howitzer of a slapshot from the middle of the ice up by the blueline, the puck beating a screened Smith who had Milan Lucic battling for space in front of him.
The big man got an assist on the tally that came at 12:23, as did Andrew Mangiapane, who battled hard to get a puck up to Stone.

Tkachuk set up in his office behind the net and fed a streaking Elias Lindholm near the end of the period, his quick one-timer into traffic that looked to have a good chance at twine glancing off Barrie and wide.
Markstrom ended the frame with 14 stops, while Smith turned aside seven.
Tanev was called for a trip on Kailer Yamamoto just 1:06 into the second period and the Oilers converted.
Markstrom made a big stop on McDavid but Calgary's clear attempt when off the stick off Draisaitl and out to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who quickly snapped a backhand that went in at 1:19 before the Flames 'tender could come back across his net.
The Flames got their first man-up at 2:14, Tkachuk feeding Sean Monahan in the slot but Smith flashing the leather to stop it.
Tkachuk was then sent off 59 seconds in the advantage for a slash on Darnell Nurse, leading to some 4-on-4 and an abbreviated Oilers PP.
But just as it ended, Bennett got a piece of an Edmonton shot that broke his stick and Monahan got the puck and made a pass up to Tkachuk as he came out of the box, No. 19 able to settle down a bouncing puck and come in with a beautiful forehand/backhand that he put right up under the bar hitting the water bottle at 5:29 for his 10th of the season.

The Oilers tied up off a rush, Dominik Kahun finishing it off by tipping it home in the blue paint at 11:29.
Markstrom stopped McDavid on the doorstep after he missed a breakout pass but corralled the puck and cut through the paint with a point-blank shot.
Elias Lindholm had a couple cracks, as did Noah Hanifin, on a long Flames possesion later in the frame when they hemmed the Oilers in, Lindholm's second headed for an open net but deflecting off the stick of Nurse at the last moment and going just wide.
Right as the buzzer went to end the period, Zack Kassian hit Joakim Nordstrom from behind and earned two minutes for boarding to give Calgary a full powerplay to start the final frame.
It was a no-go on the advantage and the teams started trading chances after that.
Brett Ritchie rifled one off the bar behind Smith and the Oilers made their way up the ice, Hanifin eventually taking a penalty on Yamamoto. McDavid made them pay right off the hop when he got the puck from Draisaitl's faceoff win and snapped it home under the arm of Markstrom at 7:01.
Markstrom left the net with just under two minutes left but the Flames weren't able to tie it up.

THEY SAID IT:

Tkachuk on the result:
"The difference is that it's happened a couple times against these guys in this rink. It's an even game and then they score late and they come out of here with two (points) and we come out of here with absolutely nothing."

"It's an even game and then they score late"

Head coach Darryl Sutter on the game:
"I think it was pretty even. Good opportunities to go ahead or to tie it up and didn't. The powerplay goal, that's a faceoff goal that I'm not so sure that Markstrom saw it or not. It was hard to tell from the bench."
