MONTREAL - Special teams proved the difference Thursday night.
The Canadiens scored two powerplay goals to erase a 2-1 Calgary lead as the Flames lost their second straight game, falling 4-2.

Brendan Parker wraps up the game

It brought Calgary's five-game road winning streak to an end in a tilt which began a seven-game trek away from the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The vistors held a one-goal edge after 20 minutes but the homeside scored one each in the next two periods on the man-up for the victory.
Mikael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane - with an abolute jaw-dropper - scored for the Flames, who are now 7-3-3.
Montreal improved to 4-10-1.
Jacob Markstrom got the start between the pipes for Calgary and was busy making 24 saves.
The Flames got off to a quick start when Backlund tipped home a point shot by Trevor Lewis past Jake Allen on the Flames third shot of the tilt just 2:02 in. For Lewis, it was his 100th career assist.
Oliver Kylington got the other helper and now has five points (1g, 4a) in his last six outings.

Ben Chairot tied the game up at 9:26 following a long Habs possesion in the Flames zone. Markstrom made a stellar right toe save on a shot by Tyler Toffoli, but the rebound went up and over the prone Flames netminder and landed in the blue paint behind him and was smacked home by the pinching Montreal blueliner.
With less than four minutes to go in the opening frame, Mangiapane scored a goal that's destined for the 'oh-my-god-are-you-kidding-me' highlight reel.
Blake Coleman skated the puck up the ice and dished off to Sean Monahan, who threaded a perfect rink-wide pass through three bodies to Mangiapane, who was sliding on one knee but managed to corral the puck and go backhand up and past Allen.
It was his second goal in as many games.

Montreal tied it up on their second powerplay of the game, a shot hitting the post and then bouncing back into the blue paint behind Markstrom again where this time it was Brendan Gallagher on the doorstep to poke it in.
Moments later, Backlund and Coleman had a lovely rush up the ice, the former passing to the latter who had a step on his defender but lost the handle on the puck, however he got it back and nearly wrapped it around into an open cage.
The shots were deadlocked 20-20 after 40 minutes, with high-danger scoring chances knotted at five apiece.
Nick Suzuki scored another powerplay marker for the homeside at 12:08 that stood up as the winner, his shot from almost behind the net going off the back of Markstrom's leg and into the cage.
Jake Evans added an empty-netter with 5.5 seconds left to play.

THEY SAID IT:

JACOB MARKSTROM ON TURNING THE PAGE:
"We've got another game tomorrow. You can't really dwell on it. But tonight's going to suck. No one was happy with the game against San Jose the other night and this is a long road trip and we wanted to start with a win and I thought we had the game where we wanted (it), but we couldn't finish it and they got three goals."

"I need to come up with a couple saves"

MIKAEL BACKLUND ON RE-SETTING FOR FRIDAY:
"We've got to re-group here, re-focus. We're not happy we're losing and good teams don't lose three in a row, we've got to find a way to bounce back tomorrow. They have a good powerplay and ... we've got to come out with a lot of energy, which I know we will. A lot of guys, hometown game. Should be a fun game tomorrow, but it's a big game for us to set up this road trip. It's a long trip and it's going to be a lot better being 1-1 than 0-2."

"We've got to re-group here, re-focus"

DARRYL SUTTER ON NEW-LOOK LINES:
"Just trying to shake some guys up that have struggled lately and try to set goals for these guys to achieve in the short term, three or four games, five games at a time. Some guys have fallen off in that. Sometimes it gets a little stale for them or something like that, but I want to get Sean going a little bit and move some other guys around and get a little more offence out of it. It's what I said a little while ago - when we were scoring three, three-and-a-half goals a game, it's not a sustainable number. It's just flat-out not. The league doesn't work like that. So, what are we, 12 games in now? We need a little more offence."

"We need a little more offence"
