HAIRY SITUATION

When it comes to moustaches, there's one that stands above the rest in National Hockey League lore - Lanny McDonald's.
The man who captained the Flames to a Stanley Cup title remains one of the franchise's most celebrated players - and the moustache remains as iconic as the man himself.
Suddenly there's an upper lip on the 2018-19 team drawing comparisons.
Sam Bennett started growing his own version this season, which really started to come into its own back in Movember.

Since then, it's taken on a life of its own.
"I don't think my moustache is anywhere near his and I don't know how long he's been growing his for but I think I still have a ways to go to be mentioned in the same sentence as him," says Bennett.
Maybe.
But even Lanny himself has taken notice.
"I think it looks great," says Lanny. "This is a helluva starter kit he has going here."
"I have the jump on him in one part, yes, I've got years of practice, but his is still red. Mine - unfortunately the red's gone south and now it's just white."
"He's got to start turning it out every day. Let it grow and it'll drive him crazy because it's going to get into his mouth and in his food until you actually train it to kind of turn out."

Bennett can confirm.
"If I comb it and put some wax in it usually stays a little bit better, but ya it's pretty annoying right now.
"I don't have too much experience when it comes to moustaches - I've been trying to comb it and train it but it's a lot of work right now."
Lanny has plenty of experience, and wisdom on the matter, and there's one big thing you have to remember when you're the owner of a good old-fashioned duster.
"Absolutely embrace it, have some fun with it, and it'll become his own," Lanny said. "Everyone is different - mine is el natural - throw a comb through it ten times a day and make sure it's as neat and presentable as possible."
While Bennett continues to adjust to the upkeep, there's no question Flames fans approve.
"I did a poll actually on Instagram to see if I should keep it or not and I think I got 75 percent of the people said I should so definitely I think the fans in Calgary love it but I don't know if I can stand it much longer."

On that topic, how much longer will the moustache stay?
"It's day-to-day for sure," Bennett says, "There's no plan with i. I don't really have any connection to it, just growing it for fun right now, to be determined if I keep it."
The dressing room, also, is a little divided.
"Mixed reviews," says Bennett. "All the young guys don't like it but some of the older guys think it's pretty cool. Mike Smith was growing one for a while there and finally gave up on it and he wants me to keep going."
Whether it stays all season or not, the original moustache man is watching.
"If he's going to keep it, embrace it and don't let anybody let him waiver," says Lanny. "Good luck, pulling for him both moustache wise and win wise."
