In February of 2011, the Flames hosted the Montreal Canadiens in front of a packed house at McMahon Stadium in the second-ever Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic.

Toques, blankets, and bubbly libations were all the rage that blustery day on Crowchild.
For others, like the great always-effusive Don Cherry, the traditional black Stetson was the symbol of choice to help celebrate the game, and our city, at this marquee event.
Best of all, the home team held serve and gave the C of Red the memory of a lifetime.

  • There were three other games that weekend that celebrated the history of the game, and our teams. On Friday, Feb. 18, the Flames' top affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, hosted the Edmonton Oilers' AHL feeder, the Oklahoma City Barons at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Barons won the game 3-1 in front of 8,407 fans at the 'Dome. Then, on Saturday, an alumni game was held, featuring a Flames roster comprised mostly of the 1989Stanley Cup-winning team, facing off against the Montreal Canadiens' legends. Finally, on Family Day Monday, the Calgary Hitmen hosted the Regina Pats and set a new junior hockey attendance record with 20,888fans on hand at McMahon Stadium. In all, the four-game festival was dubbed the 'Face-off in the Foothills.'
