Canes Pick Seven Players on Second Day of Draft
Carolina selects three forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender
With their first pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, 60th overall in the second round, the Hurricanes selected forward Gleb Trikozov. The 6'1", 185-pound left wing split the 2021-22 season between Omskie Yastreby of the MHL, Russia's top junior league, and Omskie Krylia of the VHL, Russia's second-highest professional league. Trikozov recorded 45 points (23g, 22a) in 35 MHL games and two points (1g, 1a) in 11 VHL games. He added 18 points (10g, 8a) in 13 MHL playoff games and ranked third among all MHL skaters in postseason goals as Yastreby advanced to the league semifinal. Trikozov has posted 75 points (38g, 37a) in 84 career MHL games, all with Yastreby, and finished second on the team in goals and points last season. The Omsk native has also represented Russia internationally, earning five points (1g, 4a) in five games at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup to help his country win gold. Trikozov was ranked 15th overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
With the 71st overall pick in the third round, Carolina selected forward Alexander Perevalov. The 6'0", 191-pound left wing tallied 50 points (25g, 25a) in 42 games with Loko Yaroslavl (MHL) last season, ranking tied for second on the team in goals and fourth in points. He also registered one assist in two MHL games with Loko-76 Yaroslavl and skated in his first five career Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) games with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl during the 2021-22 season. Perevalov recorded four points (3g, 1a) in nine MHL playoff games with Loko, finishing tied for third on the team in postseason goals. He has played 61 career MHL games with Loko and Loko-76, earning 57 points (29g, 28a). The Mezhdurechensk, Russia, native represented his home country at the 2021 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, posting five points (3g, 2a) in five games to win gold alongside fellow Hurricanes 2022 draft pick Gleb Trikozov. Perevalov was ranked 14th overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
The Hurricanes acquired the 101st overall pick from the Philadelphia Flyers, along with a conditional third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, in exchange for defenseman Tony DeAngelo and the 220th overall pick. With the third-round pick, Carolina selected defenseman Simon Forsmark. The 6'2", 191-pound blueliner tallied three assists in 41 Swedish Hockey League (SHL) games with Orebro HK and skated in four playoff games with the team. Forsmark also recorded 27 points (5g, 22a) in 23 games with Orebro HK's under-20 team in Sweden's top junior league last season and was named the league's Best Defenseman. He added seven points (1g, 6a) in five playoff contests and ranked second in postseason assists among all junior defensemen. Forsmark has posted 47 points (10g, 37a) in 73 career junior games since debuting with Orebro's under-20 squad in 2019-20. The Orebro native has represented Sweden at numerous international tournaments, including the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and 2022 Four Nations, and he won bronze for his country at the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship. Forsmark was ranked 33rd overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
Carolina selected forward Cruz Lucius with the 124th overall pick in the fourth round. The 6'1", 184-pound right wing played with the U.S. National Team Development Program in 2021-22, registering seven points (5g, 2a) in 10 USHL games and 17 points (9g, 8a) in 23 games with the under-18 team. The Lawrence, Kansas, native represented the U.S. at the 2022 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, recording eight points (2g, 6a) in six games to help the Americans earn a silver medal. Ranked 41st overall among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, Lucius is committed to play college hockey at the University of Wisconsin in 2022-23. His brother, Chaz, was drafted 18th overall by Winnipeg in the 2021 NHL Draft.
With their only fifth-round pick, 156th overall, the Hurricanes selected defenseman Vladimir Grudinin. The 5'10", 158-pound blueliner made his KHL debut last season, tallying one assist in six regular-season games with CSKA Moscow and skating in seven playoff games with the eventual Gagarin Cup winners. He also spent time with CSKA's affiliates in the VHL and MHL, registering three points (1g, 2a) in 12 VHL games with Zvezda Moscow (VHL) and 13 points (2g, 11a) in 18 games with Krasnaya Armiya Moscow (MHL). He played eight MHL postseason games, with one assist. The Angarsk, Russia, native has represented his home country at numerous international tournaments. He won a gold medal at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and a silver medal at the 2021 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, where he finished tied for first in goals (1) and points (5) among all Russian defensemen. Grudinin was ranked 53rd overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
Carolina selected goaltender Jakub Vondras with the 171st overall pick in the sixth round. The 6'3", 180-pound netminder spent most of the 2021-22 season in Czechia's junior leagues. He posted a 6-3-0 record, 2.13 goals-against average, .915 save percentage and one shutout in 11 appearances with HC Plzen's junior team in Czechia's highest junior league and earned a 16-2-0 record, 2.00 goals-against average and .926 save percentage in 18 games with IHC Kralove Pisek's junior team in the second-highest junior league. Vondras also played with SHC Klatovy in Czechia's third-highest professional league, registering a 1-0-0 record and 4.19 goals-against average in two games. He made 16 playoff appearances with HC Plzen's junior team, posting a 10-5 record, 1.91 goals-against average, .935 save percentage and two shutouts. The Czechia native was ranked 10th overall among European goaltenders by NHL Central Scouting.
The Hurricanes traded the 188th overall pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
With their final pick of the 2022 NHL Draft, 205th overall in the seventh round, the Hurricanes selected defenseman Alexander Pelevin. The 6'1", 183-pound blueliner spent most of the season in the MHL with Chaika Nizhny Novgorod, tallying eight points (3g, 5a) in 29 regular-season games and three assists in 10 playoff games. He also skated in two VHL games with AKM Novomoskovsk and made his KHL debut with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Pelevin has earned 13 points (3g, 10a) in 41 career MHL games over two seasons with Chaika Nizhny Novgorod. The Balakhna, Russia, native was ranked 78th overall among European skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
Carolina traded the 220th overall pick to the Philadelphia Flyers, along with defenseman Tony DeAngelo, in exchange for the 101st overall pick, a conditional third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
