RALEIGH, NC. -The Old Farmer's Almanac declares that the Dog Days of summer are July 3 - August 11.
With the buzz of free agency having worn off and training camp still being a month away, it certainly feels as if we are in the midst of that period of time, doesn't it?

Yard Sale

The highly demanded Yard Sale is back this Saturday, August 6.
2022-23 Season Ticket Members will have first access, beginning at 8 a.m., while the General Public can stop by from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Sticks, skates, signed gear, you name it, there's a decent chance that it is available. Oh, and all purchases will receive two free upper-level tickets to a preseason game, while supplies last. Not a bad deal.

Bearsy's Back

In case you missed it, defenseman Ethan Bear and the organization avoided their arbitration hearing by agreeing to a one-year contract last week.
With #25 officially being back in the mix, the Canes now have eight blueliners under contract that played NHL games last season. Following a presumed top two pairs of Slavin-Burns and Skjei-Pesce, the organization also has Bear, Jalen Chatfield, Dylan Coghlan and William Lagesson. Plus, all signs point to Jake Gardiner being back in the picture at training camp as well. It appears that all of this will make for an interesting storyline next month.
Bear and Carolina agreeing to terms means that Martin Necas and Max Lajoie are the only two remaining restricted free agents from last year's club. Lajoie's arbitration hearing is currently scheduled for next week.

With the bulk of the offseason moves having been made, it seems at least some folks like the Canes odds at a Stanley Cup in 2023.

IIHF World Junior Championships

There is hockey being played this month, after all.
The 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championships, which was originally attempted to be played December 26 through January 2 and had to be rescheduled after COVID-19 issues, will take place next week. Starting Tuesday, August 9 and going until Saturday, August 20, the best Under-20 players in the world will compete in Edmonton.
Carolina matched some history in the initial attempt at the event,
having 10 prospects named to represent their countries
. Now, due to injuries and the removal of Russia by the IIHF, the franchise will have just four prospects participating.

Nikishin On The Move

Speaking of the potential future of the franchise, another young man who fits that bill is Alexander Nikishin, taken by Carolina in the third round of the 2020 draft.
Already 6-foot-4, 216-lbs. at just 20 years of age, the defenseman was traded within the KHL this past week, dealt from Spartak Moskva to SKA St. Petersburg in exchange for the rights to nine players. Yes, you read that correctly. Nine-for-one.
Nikishin, clearly highly sought-after by powerhouse SKA, has already played parts of three seasons in the league and represented the Russian Olympic Committee at the 2022 Olympics.
