BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NORTH CAROLINA TOOLS TO VICTORY
5:10 p.m.
TV's Mike Maniscalco checks in from Detroit with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield three Tools to Victory for tonight.
1. Shake the Rust
Teams coming off the bye week have to find their legs and hands. The Hurricanes need to get to their speed in the first 10 minutes.
2. Keep it Simple
Head coach Bill Peters said this morning that short shifts and puck management become more important in the first game back. Playing within the system and getting everyone involved early will make that easier to do.
3. Build a Game
While the start is important, how the Hurricanes conitnue to play as the game progresses is just as key. Making the right plays and dictating pace through all three periods in tonight's game will also help the team later in the week.
IN THE ROOM: PETERS & WILLIAMS

Hear from head coach Bill Peters and forward Justin Williams following this morning's skate in Detroit.

CANES RETURN TO ACTION IN DETROIT
12:00 a.m.
The Carolina Hurricanes return to action following the bye week with their first of two stops of the season in Detroit.
Saturday's tilt is also the beginning of the team's ninth of 18 back-to-back sets this season, one that concludes when the Vegas Golden Knights come to town on Sunday evening.
The Hurricanes will be looking to make up some ground in the standings coming off the league-mandated break. A 1-4-0 record in their last five games prior to the bye week dropped the Canes out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, but the team remains within striking distance.
The challenge for the Hurricanes is a recent bout of injuries to key players. The team could get both Brett Pesce (upper body) and Derek Ryan (upper body) back in the lineup this weekend, but they'll remain without leading point scorer Sebastian Aho for the foreseeable future. Aho sustained a concussion and a lower-body injury against the Calgary Flames on Sunday.
"It's a great opportunity for the next guy up. You're either going to get in the lineup if you weren't in the lineup or you're going to have an increased role, increased ice time and increased opportunity on special teams," head coach Bill Peters said after a Friday afternoon practice in Detroit. "It's a great opportunity for somebody to step up and get some real traction for the second half."
The Red Wings have their eyes on the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference standings. Detroit trails Carolina by five points, as the Atlantic Division tries to keep pace with the insanely competitive Metropolitan Division.
The Red Wings were on their bye week from Jan. 8-12, but they were last in action on Tuesday, a 4-2 loss to Dallas at home. Detroit is 1-3-0 in their last four games.
"Dangerous team. I think they have a lot of pace," Peters said. "I've seen them play real good."
CANESPR NOTES: Lee Stempniak has recorded a point in two consecutive games (1g, 1a) since making his season debut on Jan. 12 against Washington. Stempniak has tallied 20 points (12g, 8a) in 47 career games against Detroit. … The Canes are 10-5-1 in back-to-back games this season, including a 6-2-0 mark in front halves.
