Smith, 28, appeared in 10 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche in 2016-17, going 1-6-1 with a 3.54 goals-against average. The Dearborn, MI, native made his NHL debut for the Avalanche on Feb. 14, stopping 37 of 40 shots in a loss against the New Jersey Devils. Smith played 17 AHL games with the San Antonio Rampage in 2016-17, posting a record of 5-8-0 with a 2.57 goals-against average.
Originally selected by the Nashville Predators in the second round, 54th overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Smith (6'0", 177 lbs.) has played 265 career AHL games with Milwaukee, Springfield, Providence, Iowa and San Antonio, going 132-98-24 with a 2.43 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. Prior to turning professional, he played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), spending the majority of that time with the Plymouth Whalers, where his head coach was current Charlotte Checkers Head Coach Mike Vellucci.
