Recap: Coyotes at Hurricanes 1.27.24

Building A Game From Behind...

Playing their final game before a week off, the Canes turned to Antti Raanta between the pipes once again.

A winner on Thursday in the team's most recent game, the veteran stopped 22 out of 24 off the tape of the New Jersey Devils.

The netminder had to be good early, as it was an atypical first 20 minutes as a whole for the Canes.  Affording Arizona a plethora of chances in transition, the Coyotes were getting quality chances from the get-go.

Despite Raanta's best efforts, and because the visitors put on a shot-blocking clinic at the other end, Andre Tourigny's squad earned the first goal of the night.

On the rush, Dylan Guenther's shot created a rebound that kicked off of a crashing Logan Cooley and in.

NeCashing In...

Coming with just 5:39 left in the first, Cooley's goal sent the Canes back to the locker room trailing by one.

Lacking their usual defensive gaps and attention to detail, Carolina needed to be better in the second period. Thankfully, they were in a major way.

Going on to outshoot the Coyotes 14-3 during the second period, this time it was Connor Ingram having to keep his team in the contest. Entering with the league's sixth-best save percentage among goalies who have played 20 games (.916), the backstop did an admirable job for a bulk of the frame.

However, he wasn't able to be perfect.

Utilizing the open ice during a rare four-on-three power play, Brent Burns and Seth Jarvis were able to set up Martin Necas for his fourth goal in five games.

Scorlov Time...

Tied heading to the finish, things were snowballing in the right direction for Carolina.

Finally getting on the board, they'd go on to put on an absolute clinic in the third period, holding Arizona without a shot on goal.

Dominating play and producing 18 shots of their own, it took longer than they'd have liked, but eventually, they broke through for the go-ahead tally.

Taking 19:24, to be exact, amid one of their many offensive zone possessions, Jack Drury dropped off a pass for* Orlov*. The defender cut toward the net from Ingram's blocker side and released one of the best shots we've seen thus season.

Sending the PNC Arena crowd into a frenzy, Orlov's third goal of the season secured the win for his club.

Just 13 seconds later, he was followed by some insurance from Jesper Fast, rounding out the scoring at 3-1.

They Said It...

Rod Brind'Amour on the hero, Orlov...

"It's tough for him because he's used to playing a lot more of a role in terms of minutes. But the strength of our team is our back end and it's tough to find those minutes that he's used to. His value is still the same. When he's out there, we need that, [what he brought] tonight. That was his best game as a Hurricane. He did everything he needed to, had good defending, and then obviously jumped in there and made a great play. Hopefully, that helps him turn the corner and feel good about what he's doing."

Dmitry Orlov in the moments after scoring the game-deciding tally...

"We're focused on our game and how we should play. Today was a result. They didn't have a lot of shots. We played the right way. It was important to get this win before the bye week. Every point matters right now, especially with everyone in our division being so tight."

Jaccob Slavin touching on the team holding Arizona to just 11 shots, including zero in the third period...

"I wouldn't say it's just our defense, it's a full five-man effort out there. All around the ice, forwards, being good on the forecheck and keeping them out of our zone and then backtracking really hard. That helps us be able to stay off of [defending]. It's something we've always talked about here, limiting their chances. When you limit them to that many shots, it's always going to help your chances."

What's Next?
