PREVIOUS MEETINGS:
THE QUICK HITS:
Last Time Out:The Canes came out of the gate strong against the Islanders on Friday, but their first period wound up being their best period of the night. The team was not particularly sharp in the second and third periods, falling behind 1-0. They were able to tie the game with the extra attacker on and just 56 seconds to go, but then the Islanders had a stunning response just over 40 seconds later, taking a 2-1 victory in regulation. Vincent Trocheck scored the goal for Carolina and Frederik Andersen suffered the defeat despite stopping 19 out of 21.
500 For Slavo:Canes defenseman Jaccob Slavin is set to play in his 500th NHL game tonight, becoming the sixth defenseman to reach the milestone with the franchise. Selected in the fourth round of the 2012 draft, #74 was a 2020 NHL All-Star, won the Lady Byng Award in 2021 and has already set a new career-high with his 37 points this year. Additionally, since 2015, Slavin leads all NHL defensemen with his 473 takeaways, 60 more than the next closest player.
Smith TBD:Defenseman Brendan Smith left Friday night's defeat over New York just 20 seconds into the third period after he was boarded by Casey Cizikas. Post-game Rod Brind'Amour said that he had not yet received an update on his status. Cizikas was suspended one game by the NHL on Saturday.
Number One Killers:Carolina had another 4-for-4 night on the penalty kill Friday, now moving their success rate to a league-leading 88.2%. They've been tops in the league for months and currently remain on pace to have a higher final number than last year's number one killing unit, Vegas, who finished at 86.8%.
Need A Helper:Jaccob Slavin and Tony DeAngelo are creeping their way up some franchise history lists, both sitting third and fourth right now for assists by a defenseman in a single season. DeAngelo (36) and Slavin (34) sit only behind Frantisek Kaberle (38) and Joni Pitkanen (40).
A Look At The Other Side:The Ducks have been in a bit of a rough patch as of late, winning just two out of their last ten games. Last night they were in Philadelphia, trailing 2-0 just 2:28 in. Over the course of the next 57:32 they'd rally for five though, coming back to earn a 5-3 victory. In other team-related news, Captain Ryan Getzlaf announced this week that he'll be retiring at season's end, reaching the end of his 17-year career. The younger players have led the charge on offense for the Ducks this season, as Troy Terry and Trevor Zegras hold the top two spots in scoring on the club.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Milestones Within Reach: Max Domi's first goal with the Canes will be his 100th of his NHL career. Teuvo Teravainen is two goals shy of 100 as a member of the team.
What Are We Wearing?:The Canes will be wearing their black sweaters tonight.
