TRACKING THE STORYLINES:
About Last Night:Despite not being the better team through the first 40 minutes the Canes were able to build a 2-1 advantage that would hold up as the game's final score. Antti Raanta was the best performer on the ice, stopping 24 of 25 in his first game played since January 1. Post-game Jordan Martinook, who scored in his return to the lineup, said that Rod Brind'Amour gave the team a talking to during the second intermission, leading to them holding New Jersey to just three shots in the final 20 minutes and allowing them to hang on for the win.
Empty The Tank:Tonight is the team's final game before their week-long All-Star break begins. The team, sans Sebastian Aho, Frederik Andersen and Rod Brind'Amour, who will all head to Vegas for the All-Star event, will be off Monday - Saturday, allowing them to recharge and reset for the second half of their regular season. Expect them to leave it all on the ice tonight, certainly they do not want to sit on a loss for over a whole week.
Fantastic Freddie:With Raanta playing last night, all signs would point to Andersen having the nod tonight. He is 12-1 in his last 13 outings, ranks second in goals against average (GAA) with his 2.06, tied for second in wins with his 23, third in save percentage (SV%) with .927.
Teravainen TBD:Top line winger Teuvo Teravainen did not play Saturday night against New Jersey due to the lingering effects of the lower-body injury he suffered last Friday against the New York Rangers. He left that game after two periods, did not play last Saturday against New Jersey, but then returned to play in the team's win over both Vegas and Ottawa. While he did not appear himself in those two games, his absence at Saturday's morning skate came as a bit of a surprise. Post-game last evening Rod Brind'Amour was non-commital on whether his Finnish winger would or would not play Sunday.
Additional Notes:
Milestone Watch: Derek Stepan is two points shy of 500 for his NHL career.
Programming Note:Please note that today's radio broadcast will be on The Buzz, not the usual 99.9 The Fan.
What Color Are We Wearing?:The team will be wearing their black alternate sweaters tonight.
