4.2.23 Recap

RALEIGH, NC. -The Carolina Hurricanes picked up an important Metropolitan Division victory on Sunday, taking a 2-1 win from the New York Islanders.

The Story

The second half of a back-to-back for both squads, the two arrived in Raleigh after being on opposite ends of a shutout Saturday. Antti Raanta and the Canes held Montreal without a goal, while the Islanders were held blanked by Tampa Bay.
While offense was at a premium at PNC Arena this afternoon, the trend would not continue for either side.
As has been the case many times in recent games for Carolina, they were the more in-control club for the opening 20 minutes, dominating possession and more than doubling New York in shots. However, the lone goal of the frame came on an opportunity for Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who beat Frederik Andersen on the rush to give the Islanders the game's first tally.
On a positive note, it would be the only shot to get by the veteran netminder all evening. Steady and contributing timely saves, Andersen was able to hold down the fort in the second and the third while the Canes' offense continued to chip away.
At the other end of the ice, All-Star Ilya Sorokin made it as difficult as possible for the home team to get on the board. Bouncing back after being pulled last night against the Lightning, the 27-year-old netminder was in a groove and made it look from the get-go that he was going to be tough to beat.
Fortunately for Carolina though, they were able to do so in the second period courtesy of Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
Set up by Jesse Puljujarvi, the trade deadline acquisition earned his long-awaited first point with the club in the form of the primary helper.
Part of a penalty-free and brisk-moving middle 20 minutes, the contest quickly advanced to the third with a 1-1 score.
It didn't take long into the frame to find the eventual game-winner though, as Jordan Martinook snapped his 24-game goal drought with a beautifully-placed shot.

New York would put a game-high eight shots on Andersen in the third, but Rod Brind'Amour's netminder was able to handle each assignment, including during the late stages while shorthanded.
Shutting the door for his 20th win of the season, the victory was the second in as many days for Carolina.

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amourdiscussing the team's victory tonight and sweep of the weekend...
"We have a job to do - finish as high as we can. That team is playing for their lives and I thought we looked like the team that was a little more desperate. That says a lot about the group to me. To come back from that tough loss in Detroit, where we had that game in control and we lost it that way, you could have easily gone a different way these past couple of games. Instead, it's fueled us to be even better. And again, to me, that says a lot about the group."
Frederik Andersenproviding his viewpoint of the victory, after falling behind 1-0 early...
"I was just trying to stay with it and make the next save. I was just trying to trust the guys to play the way that they did. It was a really good weekend for the team, the way that we played. We played a little bit more to our identity and it showed how we have to play."
Jesperi Kotkaniemion having to have patience to get goals, especially as they were outplaying their opponent, but were trailing to start the night...
"That's been our thing for a while now - we get a lot of shots but the pucks just aren't bouncing in. For our line, we finally got one. It was great to see Jesse get his first point. He's been playing really well lately and creating a lot. For the whole team though, the pucks just aren't bouncing right now. But it was a big win tonight."
