4.10.23 Recap2

OTTAWA -The Carolina Hurricanes dropped a third consecutive game on Monday, this time falling to the Ottawa Senators by a score of 3-2.

The Story

Looking to end a three-game road trip on a high note after stops in Nashville and Buffalo did not provide positive results, the Canes, unfortunately, did themselves no favors in the first period.
After they've struggled to produce a multitude of offense as of late, they surrendered two goals in the first 17:26 as a result of two defensive breakdowns. First, it was Claude Giroux serving as the beneficiary of a setup from linemates Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle. Then, before the end of the frame, Giroux was on the assisting end, allowing Stutzle to earn his 38th goal of the season.
The points were the 999th and 1000th of Giroux's career, bringing his teammates off the bench in celebration after the goal that gave their team a 2-0 lead.
Ottawa had plenty to celebrate at the end of 20 minutes, as the tallies were the only ones on the board and Carolina's offense had yet to produce anything threatening.
During the middle frame the Canes nearly went down 3-0, but thanks to Video Coach Chris Huffine, with an assist from Mike Brown, the crew successfully challenged a would-be Senators goal. And instead, the visitors would go on to claim the only tally of the 20-minute stretch.
With just 4:30 to go and the feeling that the offense was having another tough time creating quality chances, Brett Pesce injected a shot of life into his club.
Receiving a drop-off pass from Martin Necas following a zone entry, Pesce fired and beat Mads Sogaard to the glove side to bring his team within one.
Pesce's first goal since January 12 gave the Canes some hope as they returned to the ice for the third period, and that hope translated into a game-tying goal.
As the group remains in search of some sustained success on their man advantage, Brent Burns fit one through traffic to make it a 2-2 affair with 17:37 left to play.

The game progressed deeper into the third tied and a pivotal moment came when Carolina was awarded 45 seconds of five-on-three time. After taking their timeout the club got to work, but during the second penalty, forward Stefan Noesen was called for goaltender interference, moving play to four-on-four. And during that four-on-play, Ottawa scored the eventual game-winning goal.
Giroux followed the play up ice and deposited his second goal of the night, putting his team in front, 3-2.
Carolina would put together an effort to get the equalizer but to no avail, and the final horn would sound with the same score.

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amouron what he would've liked to see differently from his team tonight...
"We've got to have more urgency. We're not good enough to just kind of tiptoe around in the game. We've got to come out hard. That's one makes us a good team. I didn't like the intensity of which we were playing the game with and it showed. We took a couple of breathers on the ice and it leaves guys open. That's really all it is. You play a good team, as soon as you give them a little room, boom, we're fighting to get back into it. We always put a good effort in, but those little breathes we're taking, they've got to get out of our game."
Jaccob Slavinoffering his thoughts on how the team needed to change in the contest...
"We weren't playing with a lot of speed. We weren't playing with a lot of aggression. We're a puck-pressuring team. When we did have the puck, we weren't doing what we normally do. We get it in deep, we forecheck, we grind them down and we didn't really have any grind time in the offensive zone today, like we normally do. Those are the things we've gotten away from a little bit here and we've got to get back on."
Martin Necasassessing his thoughts on what was not correct on the trip as a whole...
"When we're at our best as our whole group we play simple hockey. We just try to dominate in their end and limit their chances. That's not what we've been doing the past few games. We've given up way too much."
