After the Canes struck twice in the final frame to earn one point, Aho's decisive dagger helped his club pocket the second as he was teed up for a one-timer in the right circle by Martin Necas on a 2-on-1. Necas finished with three points on the night, factoring in on every Canes goal.

A pair of goals from Connor McDavid put the hosts ahead 2-0 through 40 minutes, but the Canes broke through on a Shayne Gostisbehere strike just 44 seconds into the third period. The team's leading goalscorer lit the lamp for the fourth straight game on the power play as Necas recorded his first point of the night with the primary assist.

With some new-look forward lines, the Canes continued to push and Necas netted the equalizer, tapping home a backdoor feed from Eric Robinson at 13:28 of the third to set up overtime and Aho's eventual heroics.

Stats & Standouts

  • Just three days after their multi-goal comeback came up short in St. Louis, the Canes again stuck with it and this time, they got rewarded. With players like Martin Necas bagging three points and Sebastian Aho enjoying another clutch moment, Rod Brind'Amour was quick to credit his top guns after the game, citing them as "the difference" in a matchup against two of the league's most potent producers on the other side.
  • Ghost continues to thrive in spooky season, pushing his goalscoring streak to four games with his fourth of the campaign. After notching 10 tallies with the Detroit Red Wings last season, Shayne Gostisbehere is nearly halfway there in just five games and leads all NHL defensemen in goals.
  • With the game hanging in the balance in the third period, Rod Brind'Amour shifted his forward lines in an effort to get some different looks in the offensive zone. That move paid off handsomely as Eric Robinson bumped up to a line with Necas and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, setting up #88 with a perfect seam pass for the tying tally.

They Said It...

Rod Brind'Amour's thoughts on the victory...

"I know what we have in there, whether we won or not, that really doesn't change anything. It's one of those games where nothing is going our way, even when we had chances, we couldn't find a way to get a goal and it wasn't looking good. But they just kept playing, and that's all they can do. You've got to give the guys a lot of credit for that, digging in there, finding a way - Freddie made some huge saves to keep us in it, and we made some really high-end plays to find the goals."

Sebastian Aho discussing the team's late-game response...

"You want to get points any way you can, but this kind of win, coming back from two zip on the road, shows a lot about our team. Especially after it felt like we got a few bad breaks early on, it didn't get us down. We just kept pushing forward."

Sebastian Aho on his goal and overall play in overtime...

"Any other time I've played 3-on-3, I think about how I'm going to score. This time I was a little worried about how to not let (the Oilers) score. You've seen those two guys (Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl) clutching up in OT many, many times, so I was maybe playing a little bit more defensive than usual, but a couple of nice plays by Neci and Ghost and it's a 2-on-1 one-timer, so there's no other option than to try to go bar-down, and it went in."

Frederik Andersen on the team's 'never say die' attitude...

"Our identity is hard work, really, trying to grind them down and eventually get rewarded. We still have tons of skill, but the work has to come first."
