5.7.23 Recap

NEWARK, NJ. -The New Jersey Devils came alive in a major way Sunday, scoring goals galore in an 8-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Story

As the series shifted to New Jersey for the first time, the Canes were hoping to do more of what made them successful in the first two games, where they outscored the Devils by a combined score of 11-2.
Turning to Frederik Andersen for a fourth consecutive game, the netminder had allowed just three goals in three starts this postseason. However, when the puck dropped at the Prudential Center, it took just 12:31 for the home club to match Andersen's goals against total.
New Jersey found twine three times separated by just 6:33, quickly taking control of the game. Their line of Timo Meier, Jack Hughes, and Dawson Mercer combined for five points in the opening 20 minutes, setting the tone for what would be a monstrous afternoon for their group.
Carolina would find some life in the second period, but they were already too far behind the eight ball.
A fourth Devils tally just 54 seconds into the second period would end Andersen's afternoon, bringing in Pyotr Kochetkov for his first action of the 2023 postseason.
Carolina did perk up in response to the decision by their coaching staff, finally getting on the scoreboard to stop the bleeding momentarily just 67 seconds later. Sebastian Aho's fifth of the playoffs made it a 4-1 game.

New Jersey's scoring parade wasn't over just yet though, in fact, it was only halfway through.
The two sides would trade another set of goals before the end of the second period, before the horn wound sound to take it to the third by a score of 5-2. Damon Severson was next in line to find the back of the net for New Jersey, but his marker was matched by a must-see shorthanded penalty shot by Jordan Martinook.
But seven total goals weren't enough for the Metropolitan Division's top two clubs.
In fact, to close out regulation, they'd combine for their busiest stretch of the day, combining for five goals.
New Jersey's second three-goal period of the day was broken up by two more shorthanded goals for the Canes, coming via Jordan Staal and Seth Jarvis. Despite their efforts, the series' frontrunners would never get closer than three to New Jersey's lead, and eventually the final horn would sound, and the scoreboard reflected the 8-4 final.'

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amourwhen assessing the contest post-game....
"Give them the credit, they came and took it to us. That's what happened. We were horrible, and that's probably putting it mildly. It was all because of what they were doing. They were the better team, no doubt."
Jordan Staaloffering his viewpoint on what went wrong for his group tonight...
"We weren't ready, obviously. We knew they were going to come with a push and we weren't ready for it, clearly. They didn't do anything crazy special, they just got the puck in on us and played our style of game. And they did it better than us tonight."
Jordan Martinookgiving his perspective on things...
"The 50/50 pucks, we were on the wrong side of them tonight. In the third they got the two quick ones, but then we weren't out of it. We were still pushing. The five-on-three takes us out of it. To a man, we need a little bit more. If we're just a little bit off, it can look like that. We need a little more jam on Tuesday and we'll be back to where we need to be."
