SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito announced today that the club has acquired goaltender Magnus Hellberg from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for goaltender Ludovic Waeber and a conditional 2025 seventh-round draft selection.
Hellberg, 32, has appeared in three games with the Penguins in 2023-24, recording a 1-0-0 record, .922 save percentage and 2.50 goals against average. He has also played in 19 American Hockey League (AHL) games with Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, producing a 9-8-2 record, .905 save percentage and 2.92 goals against average.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound native of Uppsala, Sweden, has appeared in 26 career NHL games between the Nashville Predators (2013-14), New York Rangers (2015-16 to 2016-17), Detroit Red Wings (2021-22, 2022-23), Ottawa Senators (2022-23) and Pittsburgh Penguins (2023-24), logging an 8-8-1 record.
Over 210 career AHL games between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (2023-24), the Grand Rapids Griffins (2022-23), Hartford Wolfpack (2015-16 to 2016-17) and Milwaukee Admirals (2012-13 to 2014-15), Hellberg has amassed a 95-81-17 record, .914 save percentage and 2.53 goals against average.
On the international stage, Hellberg has represented Sweden at multiple tournaments, earning a gold medal at 2018 IIHF World Championship where he posted a 3-0-0 record, .938 save percentage and 1.63 goals against average. He also appeared in three games for Sweden at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
Hellberg was originally selected by the Nashville Predators in the second round (38th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft.
