DETROIT -- In an Atlantic Division showdown, an NFC North battle ended up breaking out at Little Caesars Arena.
The Toronto Maple Leafs outlasted the Detroit Red Wings, 10-7, in a lively atmosphere in The District Detroit on Saturday night.
Toronto (34-14-4) jumped out to a commanding 7-2 lead through two periods, but Detroit (23-24-6) exploded for five goals in the decisive third frame, twice pulling within one goal. The Maple Leafs scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to put the game away.

Both Toronto and Detroit set season-highs in scoring. Filip Hronek ended the game with four points on a goal and three assists, while Lucas Raymond added three points that were bolstered by a pair of goals. Joe Veleno scored a goal and added an assist.
Toronto's Mitch Marner had a six-point night with four goals and two assists, while rookie Michael Bunting continued his torrid stretch against Detroit with a goal and four assists on the way to five points. Auston Matthews added four points on a goal and a trio of assists.
Detroit's five goals in the third period were the most in a single frame since Dec. 8, 2011 against Phoenix.
Next Up: The Red Wings will open Women's History Month with a date against the visiting Carolina Hurricanes next Tuesday, March 1. Puck drop from Little Caesars Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.

William Nylander gave the Leafs the early advantage after scoring his 20th goal of the season. He retrieved the puck in stride just inside the blue line, and on the attack, lifted a shot over Alex Nedeljkovic's left shoulder and into the back of the net.
Toronto 2, Detroit 0 (6:18 1st period)
Bunting continued his successful rookie campaign against Detroit, scoring his fifth goal in three games against the Red Wings. He received a backhanded pass from Justin Holl behind the goal line, and flipped the puck into the net to give Toronto the two-goal lead.
Toronto 2, Detroit 1 (10:33 1st period)
Raymond tallied his 14th goal and 40th point of the season after taking advantage of a faceoff won by captain Dylan Larkin. Raymond opportunistically threw a rebounded puck at the net that got past Leafs goalie Jack Campbell.

Toronto 3, Detroit 1 (11:06 1st period)
Just 33 seconds later, Toronto extended its lead back to two goals after an athletic tip-in by David Kampf. Ilya Mikheyev shot a puck toward the net that was redirected in mid-air off the shaft of Kampf's stick, getting past Nedeljkovic, who headed to the bench and was replaced by Thomas Greiss.
Toronto 4, Detroit 1 (:33 2nd period)
Marner scored his 18th goal of the season just 33 seconds into the second period, beating Greiss on a shot that deflected off Carter Rowney's left skate.
Toronto 5, Detroit 1 (4:13 2nd period)
Marner and Toronto's top line struck again less than four minutes later. He found himself with an open net after a puck bounced multiple times in front of the crease and ended with an easy finish.
Toronto 6, Detroit 1 (9:19 2nd period)
Marner secured his first career hat trick by scoring Toronto's third goal in succession. From in between the faceoff dots, his right-handed shot beat Greiss.
Toronto 6, Detroit 2 (13:47 2nd period)
After a Campbell turnover, Sam Gagner threw the puck toward the goal, which bounced off a Toronto defender and into the back of the net. It was Gagner's sixth goal and 19th point of the season.

Toronto 7, Detroit 2 (18:38 2nd period)
With just 1:22 remaining in the period, Matthews tallied his fourth point of the night, flicking home a shot from the point. It was his 37th goal of the season, and the 78th in his last 101 games.

Hronek fielded a pass from Marc Staal after the Red Wings won a faceoff, finishing past Campbell for his fifth goal and 25th point of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Rowney scored his third goal of the season, and the first since Nov. 27, deflecting a shot originally fired by Hronek from just inside the blue line.

Toronto 7, Detroit 5 (4:42 3rd period)
The Red Wings kept the momentum going, with Veleno scoring his fifth goal of the season to pull Detroit within two goals. He fired a shot with a difficult angle from just outside the goal line, sneaking the puck past Campbell that sent him to the bench. Former Red Wing Petr Mrazek took over in goal for Toronto.

Toronto 7, Detroit 6 (5:21 3rd period)
Just 49 seconds later, Michael Rasmussen's seventh goal of the season added to an incredible comeback that pulled the Red Wings within one, 7-6. Rasmussen deflected a shot past Mrazek that was originally fired by rookie defenseman Moritz Seider, who tallied a pair of assists in the game.

Toronto 8, Detroit 6 (7:04 3rd period)
Kampf sped through Detroit's zone, eventually losing full control of the puck near the crease. But it bounced off a Detroit defenseman's skate and past Nedeljkovic, who started the third period in goal.

Raymond answered with his second goal of the game just 41 seconds later. After retrieving the puck at center ice, he accelerated toward the cage, and beat Mrazek on a shot that knuckled through his legs.

With the Red Wings on the power play, Toronto extended its lead back to two goals after tallying a short-handed goal. The puck bounced into the offensive zone, ending up on the stick of Kampf. He fed the puck to an attacking Ondrej Kase, who scored his 11th goal of the season.

Bunting intercepted the puck near center ice, and raced toward the net with Marner trailing. Bunting dropped the puck behind at the last second, leaving Marner with an open net opportunity that he finished and ended the game's scoring.
