DETROIT --During the second intermission when the Detroit Red Wings were tied, 2-2, against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, head coach Derek Lalonde delivered a simple message his players in the dressing room.

"It could have been a yelling-and-screaming-type moment," Lalonde said. "I've probably only had one or two of those this year and they've all worked, so I didn't want to waste one. But I was like, 'Guys, that hasn't been us.'"
Evidently, that message got through.
After the Red Wings held the Sharks scoreless in the third period, Andrew Copp scored the game-winning goal 25 seconds into overtime to give Detroit a 3-2 win over San Jose.
"It's been a tough few games here," said Michael Rasmussen, who had a goal and an assist against the Sharks. "We've played well and haven't gotten results. To get the two points is good."
Captain Dylan Larkin recorded his 400th career NHL point with an assist off Adam Erne's game-opening goal in the second, then Rasmussen scored at 16:29 of the same frame to put Detroit ahead, 2-1.
Red Wings goalie Ville Husso stopped 28-of-30 shots to earn his 50th career NHL win, helping Detroit improve to 20-18-8 (48 points) on the season. San Jose dropped to 14-25-10 overall.
"For parts of the game, we were really good," Copp said. "Then there were parts where we kind of went to sleep and let them back into it. We stuck with it and won the game, but the game ended up being a lot more complicated then it needed to."
NEXT UP: Before the 2023 NHL All-Star Break, the Red Wings will kick off a back-to-back road set on Thursday night against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. The back-to-back will also mark the club's annual Fathers and Mentors trip.

SCORING SUMMARY

Detroit 1, San Jose 0 (2:17, 2nd period)
Filip Hronek grabbed the puck just below San Jose's blue line and passed it directly to Larkin below the right face-off circle. Larkin skated through the circle and to the point, then fired a shot that was deflected past Sharks goaltender James Reimer by Erne stationed in the slot. With an assist on Erne's sixth goal of the season, Larkin became the fifth-youngest player in Red Wings history to reach the 400-point milestone behind Steve Yzerman, Gordie Howe, Sergei Fedorov and John Ogrodnick.

QUOTABLE

Lalonde on what pleased him most on how Detroit earned two points on Tuesday
"Our third period. I thought we pushed very well. Disappointing second, the way we managed the puck. I know the one turnover ended up in the back of our net on an extended shift...For the most part, good game. Really good third."
Lalonde on his confidence in Rasmussen
"I rarely single out a guy for an effort, especially the way we're built. It literally feels like every time we win it's a complete team effort. But Ras tonight, and he was nicked up. You could tell he wasn't 100 percent."
Rasmussen on Lalonde's message after the second period
"He left it up to us. I think we did a good job in the third and got the two points. We just came together in the locker room and everyone pulled their weight."
Copp on the importance of gaining traction as the 2023 NHL All-Star Break nears
"We've been playing pretty good. It's not perfect and we still have a long way to go, but you can see us start to build. You can feel us start to build."
