The good thing is the Wings won't have to wait long to try again to snap their skid as they visit the City of Brotherly Love next Tuesday, Election Day.
1. Dylan Larkin: Larkin scored in his last game against the Florida Panthers at home Sunday. At 13:15 of the first period Wednesday night, Larkin picked up the puck in the right circle, carried it into the left side of the high slot and shot the puck past Philadelphia goaltender Michal Neuvirth, his fourth goal of the season. Larkin had another great chance at 18:01 of the first but his shot went off the crossbar. Larkin led the Wings with five shots on goal.
Quotable: "It felt good. I tried to focus on being strong on the puck in the offensive zone and being able to get second and third opportunities in their zone to keep the play alive, and keep the cycle going. I think Frans, myself and Gus did a good job of that. As a team we got away from it in the second. I don't think we got too comfortable but we just got away from the way we were playing. We should be able to dictate how the game goes by the players on our team and by the mentality that we've got to get pucks deep and continue to grind them all 60 minutes." - Larkin
2. Andreas Athanasiou: Athanasiou came into the game with two goals for the season. He also came into Wells Fargo Center with two career goals in two games against the Flyers. Just 16 seconds after Larkin scored, Athanasiou came into the offensive zone with speed and beat Neuvirth short-side. Athanasiou finished with two shots on goal.
Quotable: "I thought Double-A's first half was really good and I didn't like the second part of the second period, so he's got to make sure he plays complete for the whole time. He's got to make sure that he's on it. Like I said, I liked the first part of it, I thought he was really playing well and then for whatever reason, he came off it." - Wings coach Jeff Blashill
3. The streak: The Wings had a 2-0 lead after the first period, but the Flyers fought back in the second to cut the lead to 2-1. The Flyers then tied the game at 3:51 of the third on Roman Lyubimov's first NHL goal. The Wings got the go-ahead goal in the third period when captain Henrik Zetterberg buried a pass from Tomas Tatar at 8:18. But Mark Streit scored a controversial goal 1:04 left in regulation. The Wings challenged that there was goaltender interference but the officials ruled that the Brayden Schenn was pushed into Petr Mrazek by a defender so the goal stood. Voracek's overtime goal means the Wings still haven't won in Philadelphia since 1997.
