Special Teams Is A Difference Maker...

Returning to game action after the league-mandated holiday break, the day started with a morning skate in Raleigh before flying to Nashville.

When the action got underway in the Music City, Pyotr Kochetkov, making a fifth consecutive start, had to be good early for his group. Including a crucial two-on-one save while shorthanded in the opening moments, #52 set the tone for what would be a big performance for him.

After both teams were unable to capitalize on early tries on the man advantage, the second and third opportunities proved to provide a different result for Carolina.

Getting the game-opening goal in the form of Aho's 500th career point, a wicked wrist shot from the circle, Brent Burns then followed suit with a seeing-eye shot from the point.

Extending their red-hot power play run to 11 for their last 25, it was not only a good first 20 minutes for Carolina, but it was also the fifth time in their last eight games that they recorded multiple goals on the man advantage.

Back And Forth Scoring...

Taking their 2-0 advantage back to the locker room, the two teams turned up the goal-scoring tempo in the first 10 minutes of the middle frame.

Beginning with Nashville beating Kochetkov for the first time on the night, a quick response from Andrei Svechnikov re-established the two-goal gap for the visitors. Cashing in after a forced turnover, it gave #37 a second consecutive multi-point game as well.

But then a power play goal from Ryan O'Reilly made it a 3-2 game, and the Predators were sent back to the man advantage nearly immediately following. Likely causing some concern, instead, Tim Gleason's penalty kill came up with their biggest denial of the evening.

Although it was still in the middle stages of the second period, that two-minute segment turned out to be the home team's best chance of the night to tie the contest.

After shutting the door, Jack Drury put his team back up by two. Continuing his career-best month, #18 jammed home a loose puck, rewarded after winning an offensive zone draw.

Wrapping up a four-goal sequence in a span of just 8:38, the Canes then claimed a fifth goal to really claim control of the affair.

A third power play goal on their sixth try, a pinballed shot from the tape of Michael Bunting hit Seth Jarvis' tape in front, giving Carolina a three-goal cushion for the first time.

Locked It Down For The Finish...

Up 5-2 after 40 minutes, the scoring was all done for the evening inside Bridgestone Arena.

Nashville would put nine more pucks onto Kochetkov, but with a little help from his defenders, he kept everything out.

Rounding out his performance with a season-high 35 saves, the 24-year-old netminder looked a lot like the version of himself that showed up during his impressive five-game stretch before Saturday's loss to New York.

Picking up his eighth win of the year in net, it was one of, if not the best outing of the season for the young #52.

They Said It...

Rod Brind'Amour showing some love to his backstop after the win...

"[Pyotr Kochetkov] played really well. At the end of the day, that's the difference. He was solid. He outplayed the other guy. If we can get that, we have a chance. I don't know that we were necessarily great tonight, but we got ahead and it was good enough. He was really good."

Sebastian Aho on the scorching man advantage...

"It's clicking. It feeds the confidence when you get a couple of goals. As of late we've been solid executing plays and passes. Whenever we've had a chance, we've been able to bury it. It's a big part of the game and we'll just try and build off of this."

Andrei Svechnikov with a simple, yet direct message, when asked about the team's mindset as they get right back into game action tomorrow night at home against Montreal...

"We've got to take everything that we did [well] and put it to tomorrow. We've got to play even better than we did today."

What's Next?

The Canes return home immediately post-game and get right back in action Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens.
