1.31.22 Fred Star of the Week

RALEIGH, NC - The National Hockey League today announced that Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen has been named the NHL's "Second Star" for the week ending Jan. 30.

Andersen, 32, registered a 3-0-0 record, 1.91 goals-against average and .938 save percentage in three starts last week and ranked tied with Calgary's Jacob Markstrom for the league lead in wins over that span. The 6'4", 229-pound netminder opened the week with 26 saves in a win over Vegas on Jan. 25 before stopping 37 of 39 shots against Ottawa as well as all three of the Senators' shootout attempts in his league-leading 13th road win of the season on Jan. 27. Andersen finished the week with a win over San Jose on Jan. 30, stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced to become the first netminder in league history to earn at least 24 wins through his first 30 appearances with an NHL franchise.
Andersen has posted a 24-6-0 record, 2.01 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and one shutout in 30 games with the Hurricanes in 2021-22, and he ranks tied for first in the NHL in wins, second in goals-against average and third in save percentage among goaltenders making at least 10 appearances this season. He also leads the league with four assists, marking the most by any Hartford/Carolina netminder since Sean Burke recorded six in 1995-96. Andersen has earned a win in 13 of his last 14 appearances dating back to Dec. 7, including each of his last six games (Jan. 15-30). His current six-game win streak is his third streak of at least six wins in 2021-22, as he opened the season with an eight-game win streak (Oct. 14-Nov. 3) and later won seven straight appearances from Dec. 7 to Jan. 7. Andersen is set to represent the Metropolitan Division in his second career NHL All-Star Game appearance next weekend, joining Arturs Irbe (1999) and Cam Ward (2011) as the third netminder in franchise history to participate in the event.
Andersen was previously named the NHL's Third Star of the Month for October after registering a 7-0-0 record, 1.29 goals-against average, .956 save percentage and one shutout in the season's opening month, and he joins Sebastian Aho (Second Star, Dec. 6-12) as the second Hurricanes player to earn a weekly NHL honor in 2021-22. The Herning, Denmark, native has posted a 250-106-48 record, 2.60 goals-against average, .916 save percentage and 20 shutouts in 423 career NHL games with Anaheim, Toronto and Carolina from 2013-22.
