The Last Meeting

With a stifling defense in front of 14 saves for Petr Mrazek, the
Canes shut out the Red Wings
, 3-0, on Thursday night. Nino Niederreiter opened the scoring just 3:38 into the game, and though Detroit managed only 11 shots through two periods, they were still within a goal of tying the game heading into the third period. Ryan Dzingel stretched the Canes' lead to 2-0 with 2:34 left in regulation, and Andrei Svechnikov sealed the win on an empty-net goal with 65 seconds left.

Hurricanes stifle Red Wings in season opener

It might not have been the Canes' finest game - it was the first game of the season, after all - but a consistent effort propelled them to their first victory of the season.
"We didn't play as good as we wanted to and made a lot of mistakes, but at the same time, we found a way to win the hockey game," Niederreiter said. "We all know as a group we have a lot better, and we know what we have to do to be better. It's the first game of the season, so it was a good win."

200 for Turbo: Teuvo Teravainen recorded his 200th career NHL assist with the only helper on Svechnikov's empty-net goal on Thursday. Originally, that was his only point of the game, but the NHL later

with an assist on Niederreiter's opening goal, as well. Teravainen has totaled 173 assists in 314 games with the Canes.
