WALLMARK DRAWS IN, DARLING MANS CREASE
5:25 p.m.
Lucas Wallmark will draw into the Carolina Hurricanes lineup tonight to center Jeff Skinner and Phil Di Giuseppe, according to head coach Bill Peters. The team will utilize the same six defensemen as last night, though the pairs will be shuffled.
"Better balance on the road. Back-to-back," Peters explained. "Play all three pairs. No match-ups."
Scott Darling will get the start in net for the Hurricanes, who will be without Jordan Staal for the second consecutive night due to family/personal reasons.
The Hurricanes will be looking to slow a four-game winless skid (0-3-1) in their final game before Monday's trade deadline.
"It's all about getting the puck in deep and establishing an O-zone forecheck," Peters said. "I thought we turned the puck over too much last night. We've got to do a better job this evening."
There's plenty to clean up from the 6-1 loss on Friday - puck management and execution chief amongst the items needing attention.
"We turned it over in the neutral zone as we were trying to change and they're coming the other way with numbers," Peters said. "We've got to be aware. Situational awareness and better execution coming out of our own end."
We'll pass along the full Hurricanes' lineup at warm-ups shortly after 6:30 p.m.
BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF NORTH CAROLINA TOOLS TO VICTORY
4:20 p.m.
TV's Mike Maniscalco remains on the shelf, so I'm pitch hitting to bring you the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina three Tools to Victory.
1. Be Offensive
The Hurricanes need to find the back of the net and break out of this slump. Five goals in the last four games isn't a recipe for success.
2. Be Powerful
A way to boost that offensive production is on the power play, which hasn't netted a goal in the last four games. Take advantage of the man advantage, and the 5-on-5 offense will follow.
3. Be Resilient
The Hurricanes need to find a way to respond after Friday night's 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tonight is a prime opportunity for the team to get back in the win column less than 24 hours after that loss.
CANES EYE REDEMPTION IN DETROIT
3:00 a.m.
One of the few positive aspects to glean from the Carolina Hurricanes' 6-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night is the opportunity to get right back at it less than 24 hours later in Detroit.
The Hurricanes will face off with the Red Wings in the second half of this 13th back-to-back of the season, a chance to put a tourniquet on this four-game winless streak (0-3-1).
In four consecutive games against the Metropolitan Division, the Canes earned just one of a possible eight points and were outscored 17-5 in that stretch, statistics acerbated by the Canes' 6-1 loss at home on Friday.
"There was really nothing good about it," Justin Williams said. "The storyline is they outworked us and showed us they wanted it more tonight. That's frustrating because we've got to be better."
"It was a tough game for us," said Teuvo Teravainen, who scored his 15th goal of the season to match his career high from a year ago. "They scored a lot of goals and got the momentum. We never really came back. We didn't fight enough. It can't happen."
Jordan Staal was a late scratch in Friday's game due to a family/personal matter. He's not expected to play on Saturday, either, according to head coach Bill Peters. Lucas Wallmark, recalled on Friday afternoon from Charlotte, will be available.
The Red Wings will be closing out a four-game homestand on Saturday night, looking for their first win of the week (0-2-1). The Wings are 12-13-8 at the new Little Caesars Arena this season.
Saturday's showdown will draw an end to the three-game series between the Canes and Wings, with the road team emerging victorious in the first two games; Carolina won 3-1 in Detroit coming off the bye week on Jan. 20, and the Red Wings bested the Canes 4-1 in Raleigh on Feb. 2.
CANESPR NOTES: Justin Faulk led the team with four points (2g, 2a) in three games against the Red Wings last season. In addition, Faulk has registered 15 points (4g, 11a) and four multi-point contests in 15 career games against Detroit. … Scott Darling's start on Feb. 2 was his first career appearance vs. Detroit.
