3.3.23 Recap Win2

TEMPE, AZ. -New acquisition Shayne Gostisbehere wasted little time in making his presence felt with his new team, scoring in the Carolina Hurricanes' 6-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes Friday.

The Story

Making their first-ever appearance at Mullett Arena, the scoring started early and it came often for the Metropolitan Division's leaders.
Just 2:20 in Brent Burns found Paul Stastny all alone in the slot, and it was off to the races for Carolina.
The hosting Coyotes had a strong push in response, but just 5:37 later Rod Brind'Amour's club extended their lead by a pair.
A subtle dash of defensive help from Andrei Svechnikov in his own end allowed Sebastian Aho to go the other way, tucking a jumping puck under Karel Vejmelka for his first of two goals on the night.

The good start then carried into the second period, where the Canes took complete control of the contest.
Jaccob Slavin started the three-goal frame with a shot that rang off the crossbar and went south, echoing throughout the entirety of the 5,000-seat building.

The only blemish of the entire evening for Carolina followed as Lawson Crouse snapped Antti Raanta's shutout bid. But fewer than two minutes later, the Canes had a response.
On the very first power play of the night for the team, and on his very first shift as a part of the unit, Gostisbehere found twine in his former building.

Receiving cheers throughout, the first as a Hurricane for "Ghost" was also the first of two power play goals in 2:12 for the club. Much like the tally for the debutant, Stefan Noesen set a screen in front and this time it was Aho earning his second of the night.
Taking a 5-1 lead to the third period, it was only 18 minutes of mandatory intermission that separated the group from their sixth goal of the night.
Already 2/2 on the power play, Martin Necas made it 3/3 when he blasted one home from Brent Burns.
Outshooting Arizona 21-2 over the final 20 minutes, the clock would eventually run out and close the book on a dominant 6-1 victory for the Canes.

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amour'sopening remarks, post-game...
"I thought we were a little sluggish in the first. Then we had a little powwow and our game got to what it should look like. Obviously they're going through a different phase [as a team], so that's kind of how it should look."
Shayne Gostisbehereexpressing some of his emotions after the win...
"I'm not going to lie, just being on the other side so quick [was weird]. I was just on the other team the other day... These guys (the Canes' players) have been awesome. I'm asking questions every shift and they've been great."
Antti Raantawhen asked what he credited the win to, improving to 13-0-2 in his last 15 appearances...
"The boys in front of me. Here and there there might be breakdowns, but you can see how we played in that third period. I had two saves to make. When the whole team is buying in and we're playing with our system, you feel much more comfortable in the net. Your job is to make the saves when it matters and obviously I've been able to do that."
