10.25.23 Pesce IR2

RALEIGH, NC. - The Carolina Hurricanes will be without defenseman Brett Pesce for two to four weeks, the team announced Wednesday.

While the latest blow to the Canes' lineup is suboptimal, the timeline could have been much worse.

Following the team's practice at Invisalign Arena to start the day, Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour said that the initial news was not good and that the injury would be much longer than week-to-week. Instead, Pesce is now expected to be back in the lineup at some point during the month of November.

Pesce suffered the lower-body injury on Thursday, October 19 during the team's game against the Seattle Kraken and he has not played since.

To compensate for the 28-year-old coming out of the lineup, the team recalled blueliner Dylan Coghlan from the Springfield Thunderbirds of the American Hockey League on Tuesday. Tony DeAngelo skated alongside Pesce's normal partner, Brady Skjei, but the defensive pairs were ever-changing during Tuesday's game in Tampa.

Ponomarev, Suzuki "Progressing Nicely"

Although the team has been dealt several tough blows in the injury department to start the season, it feels as if the unit is on the upswing now.

With Sebastian Aho returning this week, and both Frederik Andersen (precautionary, upper-body injury) and Andrei Svechnikov (knee) candidates to skate in the team's next two games, the group welcomes all the steps forward it can get.

Updates provided on Wednesday also indicate that both Vasily Ponomarev and Ryan Suzuki are closing in on returns from their pre-season injuries.

Ponomarev, the team's second-round draft pick in 2020, suffered "a tweak in his knee" during the very first practice of training camp on September 22.

Suzuki, the team's first-round selection in 2019, went down with a shoulder injury during the team's final road preseason game in Nashville.

There's no word on what will happen with either when they are healthy and game-ready, but it's certainly a positive that the two are on their way toward it.
