A pair of Carolina Hurricanes' defensive prospects received recognition for their standout performances in the American Hockey League during the 2019-20 season.

Jake Bean was named an AHL First Team All-Star, and Joey Keane was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team.

Bean, drafted 13th overall by the Canes in 2016, paced all AHL defensemen with 48 points in 59 games. He ranked tied for fourth overall in the AHL in assists (38) and led the Checkers in both points and assists. The second-year pro, who played in two games with the Canes in the 2018-19 season, also represented the Charlotte Checkers at the 2020 All-Star Classic.

Keane, acquired from the New York Rangers in February, led all AHL rookie defensemen in goals (9) and ranked second in points (37) and third in assists (28). The 20-year-old finished in the top 10 of all AHL defensemen in all three of those statistical categories, as well. Keane, who recorded seven points (1g, 6a) in nine games with Charlotte, is the second Checkers defenseman to be named to the league's All-Rookie Team after Bean was honored in 2018-19.

The AHL canceled the remainder of its 2019-20 regular season and the 2020 Calder Cup Playoffs due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. As such, the AHL's standings and statistics as of March 12, 2020, are considered final.

As the defending Calder Cup Champions, the Checkers finished the season with a 34-22-5 record and 73 points (.598 points percentage), ranking third in the Atlantic Division.
