12.9.21 Win

CALGARY, AB. -Sebastian Aho scored both of his team's goals Thursday night, including the overtime winner to push the Carolina Hurricanes past Calgary Flames by a score of 2-1.

Three Takeaways

1) It Might Not Have Been Pretty, But The Canes Found A Way To Get It Done
The Calgary Flames presented a tough test from start to finish, showing no surprise as to why they lead the Pacific Division. Their combination of physical and heavy players mixed with their high-end talent and skill provided Carolina with a tough test in numerous aspects of the game.
Frederik Andersen was relied upon heavily, stopping 26 out of 27 shots, including a Noah Hanifin penalty shot early in the contest.
Rod Brind'Amour said post-game that he thought the game was "gross", but he was proud of how his team dug in, considering Calgary is a team that doesn't give you much to work with offensively. A normally potent Carolina offense was held to 26 total shots through over 64 minutes of play, but they stuck with it and found a way to get a second one past Jacob Markstrom.
2) Sebastian Aho Remains On Fire
It's easy to say a player had a good game when you see on a box score that they had two tallies, however, Aho's performance extended well beyond just the goal scoring.
His first of the evening was the culmination of a strong shift, one in which he won two battles against Flames defender Rasmus Andersson before beating him to the front of the net to tip home his 12th of the season.

In the third period, he also contributed toward keeping the puck out of his own cage. With Andersen attempting to recover from an attempt at making an initial save on Andersson, Aho worked to his own

.
Then, in overtime, he utilized his speed and puck protection skills to drive to the net and give his team the second point.

20 now has nine points in his last four games, bringing his season total to 29 points in 25 games.
3) Jaccob Slavin Continues To Be A Workhorse
While this isn't new news, an eye-popping total of 32:28 time on ice for the team's defensive anchor commands a call for appreciation.
This output comes just two days after playing a regulation game high of 29:51, no less.
It was implied when Tony DeAngelo and Brett Pesce came out of the lineup that Slavin would likely have to increase his workload, but how much he's doing and how he's doing it are simply remarkable. His head coach said post-game of him that he "couldn't be more impressed with an individual".
They Said It:
Rod Brind'Amour on how valuable Sebastian Aho is to the club:
"That's your best player. We rely on him to do a lot of things and he came through for us. A lot of guys were just having off nights, it was hard to get anything generated. Sometimes that's what happens, sometimes the best players just have to take over."
Frederik Andersenon what he saw from the opposition and how the team in front of him handled it:
"They have their guys that are tough, go to the net and play a little bit harder, and then they have their skill guys. They've got a good mix. I think we handled it well. Our guys played awesome, we didn't give up a whole lot. We stuck with it all game and eventually got the break. Our patience was really good this evening.
What's Next?:
The team flies to Edmonton post-game before their Saturday evening matchup against the Oilers. They will not practice Friday.
Bonus Notes:
- Defenseman Ethan Bear did not play in the contest. He was absent from morning skate due to illness, however, tried to give playing a try by taking warmups. He made it through but wasn't feeling up to par, so Max Lajoie stepped in.

  • Jordan Staal led all skaters with six hits.
  • With an assist on Aho's first goal of the night, Nino Niederreiter moved his current stretch to eight points in his last seven games.
  • In addition to his efforts in net, Andersen was credited with the primary assist on the game-winning goal.
