5.5.23 Recap

RALEIGH, NC. -The Carolina Hurricanes successfully took care of business at PNC Arena again on Friday, throttling the New Jersey Devils by a score of 6-1 in Game 2.

The Story

Returning to action 48 hours after taking a 1-0 series lead, the Canes knew that their opposition would want to come out of the gate with a better showing.
They did exactly that, with New Jersey being the far superior team in the first 10 minutes.
With Carolina taking two penalties during that time, the Devils certainly had things trending in their direction to start the evening, but they were unable to crack Freddie Andersen, who was making a third consecutive start for the Canes.
After Tim Gleason's penalty killers were able to aid the home club out of danger early, the Canes were then able to get to their game. Carolina would dominate the back half of the opening stanza, but Akira Schmid weathered the storm for his club to send the two sides to break scoreless.
However, those zeros would give way quickly in the second and the numbers piled up quickly for Carolina.
The Metropolitan Division Champions scored four times in 18:09, taking a firm grasp of the contest and chasing Schmid for a second consecutive game.
Carolina's quartet started with a pair of goals from Jesperi Kotkaniemi just 2:23 apart, beginning 1:35 into the frame.

With the first of the two coming during some leftover power play time to start the period, #82 then followed it up by putting home some strong work below the goal line by linemates Jordan Martinook and Jesper Fast.
The two-goal lead began a snowball for Carolina, pushing all momentum in their favor as the second period progressed.
Then, inside the final five minutes, Captain Jordan Staal showcased his hands when he worked in all alone on the Devils' netminder.
The trio of markers would have been more than enough, but with just 16 seconds to go in the frame, Martin Necas concluded the flurry of offense with his second of the postseason.

Metaphorically, PNC Arena's ice was tilted completely in the favor of Carolina after two periods and when the two sides returned for the third, Lindy Ruff elected to turn to Vitek Vanecek in between the pipes once again.
Like Wednesday, it did spark a little life into the Devils, leading them to their first and only goal of the evening just 3:49 into the final frame of regulation. The only blemish on Andersen's evening, Miles Wood was credited with the tally for New Jersey.
But then, it was back to things being clockwork for the home side.
Jordan Martinook intercepted a pass in his defensive end and went the entire length of the ice for a beautiful breakaway tally.
And lastly, to close out the night, Stefan Noesen tapped home an aerial pass from Sebastian Aho to round out the evening's 6-1 score.

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amouron Frederik Andersen's evening...
"At the start of the game they were coming. Then we got a couple penalties and a portion of a five-on-three. The game's totally different if they get one there. Huge saves (by him). Our penalty kill was okay, but they hit the post on the one and Freddie was there all night. There was never a time where he wasn't having to make saves. That was a difference, for sure."
Jesperi Kotkaniemitrying to describe why his team's success in simplest terms, at the moment...
"I think we've been doing a really good job of staying on the pucks, until the end. We've been grinding it out and it's been paying off right now."
Jordan Martinookwhen asked if he's felt a difference in his noticeably evident play over the last few contests...
"Since Game 6 against the Islanders I've felt like I've been all over it. Last game I had my chances and tonight I was getting my chances. On the breakaway, I just like that shot. It got a piece of him, but I'll take it. Hopefully I can keep it going here."
