Entering as winners of their last four games, the Canes had a chance to earn revenge against Vegas, the team they'd most recently lost to.
Just 10 days after falling to them at T-Mobile Arena, Rod Brind'Amour and crew were hoping to begin their home-road back-to-back on the right foot. Instead, the Golden Knights had other plans.
Coming out of the gate with an early push, Jonathan Marchessault was able to put one through the five-hole of Frederik Andersen just 4:03 in.
Forcing Carolina to play from behind, the remainder of their first period contained an adequate pushback, but nothing that was able to beat Jonathan Quick. Setting the tone for what would be a solid night for him, the visitors took their one-goal advantage into the first break.
In the second, they doubled it.
After the Canes weren't able to do much with their first and only power play of the night, the home team's inability to create threatening opportunities continued on at five-on-five. Producing just two high-danger chances* at even strength in the second period, Vegas took advantage of a mishandled puck in Carolina's end to move their lead to 2-0.
Proving to be the lone goal of the middle stanza, the third period was no kinder to the home club.
Although they'd outshoot their opponent 11-6 to close out the contest, Quick was up to par on all 11. He'd get two more goals of support to wrap up the offense, putting a bow on his second shutout of the season and first as a member of the Pacific Division's leaders.
