4.23.23 Recap2

ELMONT, NY. -The Carolina Hurricanes are now just one game away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinals after defeating the New York Islanders by a score of 5-2 Sunday.

The Story

Aiming to bounce back after suffering their first defeat of the series on Friday night, Rod Brind'Amour and players alike
stressed on Saturday
that trusting their set plays on the man advantage would be key moving forward.
With a heavy sense of physicality again from the get-go, it took just 2:41 for the group to get their first opportunity. 49 seconds later the chance doubled, becoming a two-man advantage.
And Carolina would make good on it.
The lone first-period tally came as a part of what was another start marred by penalties, with six calls coming in the opening 8:43. However, one final infraction came at the buzzer of the first period, sending Carolina to the power-play to start the second.
And again, they'd cash in.

Giving them a second game in the series with multiple power play goals, Antti Raanta was able to comfortably able get into a groove behind his club. And although at five-on-five the team's forward lines were a constant rotation after losing Jack Drury due to an upper-body injury in the first period, the forced shuffling wound up leading to success for Rod Brind'Amour and co.
Mackenzie MacEachern, making his Canes debut after being recalled from the Chicago Wolves (AHL) on Thursday, found himself playing alongside Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas after originally drawing in for Derek Stepan. Bringing five games of prior Stanley Cup playoffs experience from his time with the Blues during the 2020 postseason, MacEachern's first as a member of Carolina would be a special one.

Aho's second goal of the series was also the 20th of his postseason career, officially passing Eric Staal for the most in franchise history. It also sent the Canes to the final frame of regulation with a three-goal lead.
But three wasn't enough for Seth Jarvis, who used a breakaway to beautifully net his second goal of the afternoon just moments into the third.

The four goals of offense would be more than enough for Carolina, but the Islanders wouldn't roll over.
New York was able to sandwich a pair of goals around one more memory for MacEachern, who wrapped up the Canes' scoring on the afternoon with a goal of his own.
Becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to record a goal and multiple points in his playoff debut, MacEachern's major afternoon brought the Canes to their 5-2 finish, giving them a two-game lead in the series.

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amourdelving into his rationale on starting Antti Raanta for a fourth consecutive game...
"With our goalies, it's just... give us a chance. Keep us in the game. And that's what he's done in all of his starts. So good on him, that's for sure."
Seth Jarvisdiscussing the team finally being able to get a win away from PNC Arena...
"It's nice to win one not on home ice. I think it only helps us. It's not good when you can't win on the road, so it's nice to take one here and go back to (Raleigh)."
Mackenzie MacEachernproviding his thoughts on jumping into the lineup after not playing a regular season game with the club...
"It's a pretty easy group to step into. I got to know a few of them during training camp, but it's an unbelievable group. They're a bunch of nice guys. They made me feel pretty welcome right away. It's just an unbelievable experience... I'm just trying to take it all in and go shift-by-shift."
